A crappy little site that ranked #1 in a popular niche on google brings in more users than a great site with poor SEO. How do break down the components to a successful website? My guess: 40% content 10% design 50% seo tactics Do you agree/disagree?
I think you'll find it is a 100% SEO, and 80% content Since good content is a prime SEO tactic. Link building etc have to come after content, otherwise (with the best will in the world) any SEO / linkbuilding you do is a complete waste of time. However, if you use the right SEO techniques you will be making your site more useful for viewers.
I have had a business website since 2003 and nobody linked to it till I woke up and started doing off-page optimization last year. So, I believe that on-page and off-page optimization make for 99% of success and the content on a business website is practically worthless.
i'm amazed by the disparity in the responses here, we have ssand who says it's 99% content and bluehat says it's 99% SEO
