Can anyone explain constant shifting in SERPs

Discussion in 'Google' started by billybw, Mar 16, 2008.

The rankings of most of the pages on my site (for their main keyword) continually shift their positions in the Google SERPs.

For example, one page moves up and down between position 7 and position 14. These movements occur daily or even hourly.

PLEASE DO NOT SUGGEST THAT THIS IS DUE TO SANDBOX OR PAGERANK OR BACKLINK FLUCTUATIONS OR DIFFERENT DATA CENTERS. THIS SITE IS MORE THAN 3 YEARS OLD. BACKLINK CHANGES COULD NOT POSSIBLY CAUSE FREQUENT MOVEMENTS OF THIS SIZE. AND THESE MOVEMENTS OCCUR ON THE SAME DATACENTER.

sO SINCE THOSE POSSIBILITIES ARE ELIMINATED, CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN WHAT REALLY CAUSES THIS CONTINUALLY UP AND DOWN MOVEMENT?

    Thank you

This came to my attention more since right before the last PR update, can you say the sites that momentarily overrank you are majorly older websites than yours? If that's the case, that's what i have noticed.

I agree with njoker, nobody can give you 100& certainties

If your site is a directory I would assume the ever changing content goes hand in hand with the every changing Google

A lot of things. Obviously, one is that your competition are probably doing seo work themselves, so things are naturally going to be in a flux. There are probably algorithm tweaks at Google.

One of my pages ( 'Where the Mountains Meet the Prairie' ) keeps dropping in and out of Google's index. When it falls out, the links on the page vanish; when Google "knows about" it, the links on the page have at least a little bit of juice to pass on. Some of the links floating you up in the search results might be doing the same thing?

Thanks for the replies. I should have mentioned that I haven't made any changes to most of the pages on my site in several months, so that doesn't explain it.

It's true that Google is constantly tweaking its algo, so that could be part of it. But I don't think minor tweaks can explain repeated up and down movemnets of 7 places (as in my example).

This probably has to do with the search engine algorithm but there could be other reasons as well.

I see constant, weird changes for two sites of mine as well that have been stable for almost 2 years, not sure what's going on, but it's definitely unusual...

Some of the flux is due to either rollbacks or the index being updated and data centers are not in sync

I have seen some movement on the the same datacenter for the last 3 days for one of my sites thats 9 years old. I really quite paying attention to google when it sneezes. I just decided to better spend that time creating a a new page or more content.
