Why is Matt Cutts promoting WMW?

Matt Cutts has a blog post giving detailed instructions on how to sign up for WMW.

Why? Any webmaster should know how to sign up for a forum, if its not clear enough why should a google employee feel the need to point it out?

Because like he says their login/ register page looks like a page that needs credit card or you wont get through. =P Even i have tought that sometimes but then i figured out its optional :p Perhaps becausem ost of us close the page really quick if we arent that interested :)

Yea, I just noticed that. I wish Matt would put in half of the effort to reach out to the broader webmaster community that he does in reaching out to the SEO community. I'm sure that regular webmasters will adore him just as much as the SEOs do.

Quite correct. I agree with him that WMW is not a very user friendly site and that it is inaccesible. Why he feels the need to help them and point this out I don't know.

Well, I made a mistake and got kicked off:

I was a newbie to the whole forum thing. I was suggesting a domain name in the forum and actually wrote it out. Over there you can't do that. You just write in domain.com vs. domain-name.com.

I didn't read the "Charter" so it was my fault. What peeved me was that they deleted my post and never PMed me saying, "Buddy, you can't do this."

Then I was stupid enough to post it again and I got the boot. That's when they sent a PM. Anyway at least I learned that you always gotta read the TOS.

Thank god I didn't make that mistake for adsense, huh :)?

But about the login thing. It was pretty straight forward to me. I don't really get why he needs to either.

The funny thing is.... WMW is totally cloaking there nuts off... then manipulating the user into paying for a subscription AND Matt is linking to it.

    I do not like it...

I don't care for the whole wmw setup, it their stripped down version for search engines and guests just doesn't appeal to me. Seems like they care more about serps than asthetically pleasing their visitors.

Maybe because it has been Google's main propaganda arm to the webmaster community from day one and still is today!

Pre moderation and censorship is the rule of the day at WMW and on a lot of other forums too!

WMW vs DP .... no contest .. imo you guys will win hands down at the moment.. maybe WMW can regain so ground but i think DP would have to make so big mistakes ..

    "digitalpoint" = banned at wmw.

Why would you promote a site that has a ban on a term that has 1.8 mil results in Google? Still, 'they' have been promoting it for years.

I suppose we (shawn) can be thankful that this forum is easy enough to use that people don't need instructions.

Maybe Matt is trying to hint that usability is important in the algorithm

Well at least you get a signature for posting here, WMW does not give you one I don't think, Sitepoint took them down to guest view, so they suck too!

Do you ever read any threads over there that have any personality, witty or any thing other that a night out with Bamber Gascoigne?

At least people here are real.

I try not to go there to be honest about it, most webmaster forums will bore the tears out of you, I mostly go to forums because I like the other members and think of a few of them as friends!

PS: Or to shake some nuts out of the trees!
