I have my eye on a couple of domains BUT I've recently read about the sometime previous bad life of domains.

How do you tell / Where can you go to find out if a domain name has been banned by google, used for spamming etc, etc

You could try to view an archive of it at archive.org .

Archive.org gives an archive of the site.

Also make sure to do a Google search for the sitename.com.

    That is a start.

I've searched archive.org and google.com and there are no matches for the domain I'm looking at - does this mean it's in the clear? Is there a definitive list somewhere of banned/suspect domains?

If you search you names here:

    http://whois.domaintools.com

Under "server data" you will see a "black list status" field. That might be a tell for you too. That's about all I got, hope it helps.

    I check Archive.org, also do a "site: domainurl.com" and "link: domainurl.com"

If nothing shows up, it either means it was banned by Google, or the previous owner never used/developed it. It might have just been parked, etc.

I don't believe there is any way to tell for sure, but using those methods should help a lot.

enter url:domainname into google and if something comes up then google has not banned it, if nothing comes up it is either banned or just has not been indexed yet.
