Gmail bans IPs?

I've been using Gmail for about a year or something now.

Yesterday I was sending a 50mb file to someone else with a Gmail account, I left it on overnight as it was taking its time. Today I woke up and it was still on the same screen, I opened up a separate internet window, but Gmail kept timing out. I restarted the computer (which also meant the email didn't send in the end), and it seems I'm still not able to reach Gmail.com, Firefox gives the message:

    "The connection has timed out

The server at www.gmail.com is taking too long to respond."

But I can reach Gmail with a proxy, eventhough it's annoyingly slow and doesn't support standard view (which I need for 200 emails/day). So it looks like they've banned my IP since I tried to send a 50mb file? Has anyone else had this problem? I've never really sent an email over 1mb before, and I haven't used my account for file sharing or anything dodgy.

I'm not so sure, generally when you get banned they display a nice little message.

It could be the gmail server you are accessing is down and the proxy connects through a different server, I'd wait a day or so and see how it goes.

I have had that same message myself. It is frustrating, but should clear up. If not then contact them and let them know. They can provide you with a more suitable answer then you will find here. Remember they have alot of servers operating their system so the proxy is most likely connecting to a totally different server.

I maintain a constant connection to my gmail account and I see these messages pop up throughout the day. It seems to be normal. O have not timed them, but it certainly suggests less than 99% uptime reliability --

I wouldn't worry about it ... Sounds like the server is just down.

BLitz, the reason you are seeing this message is not because you were banned. It's simply because Gmail does not allow sending of attachments larger than 10MB. If you try sending it in IE, you will get the error message too. Probably "Oops, the system was unable to complete your request, please try again later."

If you need to send that file, I suggest you try out this service. It has some limitations, but for a free service, i think it's very useful. :)
