.NET 2.0 Rocks

I have been messing with 2.0 and VS2005 for a bit now and I must say, wow...the web authoring tools for creating data grids/edits, user administration are just awesome. Worth upgrading for sure. Talk about timesavers!

 

no kidding, there are functions that I took days developing working models for that are now included as standard classes. Wish they would have had them last year!

I have been looking at using 2.0 for some blackberry wireless projects I am working on.

 

I have been using .NET 2.0 since last December (2004) and it's truely an amazing platform to build powerful applications on. I have a CMS, Forum system and more lined up waiting to be developed using .NET 2.0.

It sure is awesome coming across other .NET folks. Tony you can start a thread with stuff you need help with on traffic.

And for who ever starts complaining about Microsoft.NET in this thread I will shove you full of goodies and links to start learning .NET 2.0

 

can you recomend any decent hosts that support asp.net 2? most still only support 1.1 that i have come across
oh and idealy id like them to be cheap!

 

I absolutely agree with the value of .NET 2.0. I remember hearing alot of people bashing it when it first came out but once they saw the true value and efficiency that it brings to the table they quickly said otherwise.

 

NEWS: .NET2.0 has finally made it from our development environment to out test/training servers. Just one step closer to me being able to using the new framework!

I used http://www.discountasp.net/ about 12 months ago when they were not using .net.

This has to be the most professional, organised, and cheap .net company. They specialise in .NET and run 40+ addins for you.

what is the learning curve for .net 2.0? I want to convert, but it is hard to muster up the effort to rewrite the old stuff

I was wondering how you have made out designing your CMS? Did you design one yourself or did you end up going with a 3rd party product?

I want to design one myself but it seems almost overwhelming to think about. However, the solutions I have found out there are just too expensive.

I did manage to get Axinom CMs up and running but they have terrible documentation. It took me 2 weeks to get it up and running, then I couldn't figure out how to populate it. Nothing makes sense.

If you happen to have any suggestions, I would be greatful.

The CMS I am developing is like what you have seen before I am sure. It is more of a framework/platform so you can customize & program against it. It does use Windows Sharepoint Services for document management / document workflow. Since I am taking advantage parts of Microsoft Office 2007's server suite my CMS will not be out for sale for a while due to Microsoft's timeline for Office 2007. In the future though I am going to be taking advantage of the new Windows Presentation Foundation to provide a very rich user interface.

 

Is there an issue with migrating data from .NET 1.1 to 2.0? i.e. Will all tables and DB be lost or will it all have to be rebuilt?

My webhost has dropdown menu available to go from 1.1 to 2.0. My finger is really close to going for it. But I wanted to find out if there was a potential problem.

Nope there should be no issue at all if your code is clean. Data is safe as far as data in a SQL database.

Thanks for the assist Jeff. You were absolutely correct. All data stayed in place with no corruption or deviation of tables. BTW, I have all data in SQL 2003. Will probably fool with new toys when I get a chance.

 

even i am big fan about asp, every thing is easy , this could be some times be the problem as well - at times we stop thinking out of the box, at times things are not optimized as well. It is dangerous if a new developer without proper theoritical knowledge starts coding
