The three best ways are have high quality content, building lots of quality links with good anchor text, and patience :) And then a little more link building...

Two major major major factors that were not so big of an issue a few years back are:

    1. Unique Content
    2. Update Frequency (How often your site is updated)

Also, as drmadcow said, be patient ;)
But then again, make sure you update frequently and have good BLs

Quality content written for READERs not the SE. An older domain name, lots of inbound quality relevant link. Use the to correct keyword phrase and the put the bloody thing in the pages Title tags. Do some social bookmarking, take two aspirin and call in the morning. Oh make sure the site is listed on DMOZ and Yahoo directory paid listing.

The whole site needs to be well constructed. Not just ONE page. Keyword competitiveness has a lot to do with making #1... If you choose a phrase like Guitar.... GOOOD LUCK... but if you choose a phrase like "1976 Red Fender Stratocaster" you will have a better shot...and it will convert as well.

    good luckl

Unique content and consistency of uploading unique content.

You want to upload two or three articles a week not seven or eight a month.

    Will.

But basically Google fights most SEO attempts to manipulate the SERPs.

And Google is almost always successful although SEOs, blackhatters primarily, just keep moving on and around Googles algo.

So what did they recently fix? Paid links? Fine, you can say that paid links are not a SEO priority right now, but they were extremely benficial only a year ago...

#1 way is correct, needs to have many backlinks and quality content. Sometimes it is a good idea to pay for backlinks if they're PR is high enough.

    In order of importance:

    1. Backlinks with high PageRank (keyword in link text, smaller qty is okay)
    2. Title tag containing targeted keyword
    3. Backlinks with mid-low PageRank (keyword in link text, large qty is important)
    4. All links on your site using "nofollow"
    5. Keyword in domain name

Notice, I didn't list content. You should have relevant content for search engines but "GOOD" content is more about getting sites to link to you naturally which is part of either 1 or 3.

    Good luck

If I had to pick only one, it would be diligent keyword research, followed by proper use of the chosen keywords in such things as the title, the URL file name, the content of the page itself, and as anchor text in the backlinks to your website.

I'm curious why that's "a stupid question". It seems like a reasonable question to me, and the varying replies indicate conscientious differences of opinion.

I just assume that everyone knows that inbound links will make your site rank higher.

Not to be rude but there is always going to be varying replies on public forums such as this. People read and repost. People just have to learn to understand and recognize real advice verses people just typing/acting.
