    My main site http://www.clevelandcourt.co.uk
comes up #2 on google.co.uk for the search phrase "holiday flats" out of 758,000 results. But when I search google.co.uk for "blackpool holiday flats" same site comes up #7 with only 57,400 results.

So can some very kind person give me some idea why? Have I got too many occurrences of Blackpool, not enough, need more content about blackpool?

Any ideas as my holiday flats are in Blackpool and I would like to rank higher for 'blackpool holiday flats'.

Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

    1. Blackpool is a popular word. Adding it to your search query only increases the quality of your competitors.
    2. All competitors that are ahead of you have the "Blackpool" keyword in their URL.

I say you should get more backlinks with the "Blackpool Holiday Flats" anchor text and you should be just fine.

because two keywords that you mention are TOTALY different keywords. "holiday flats" is not equal to "blackpool holiday flats"

    Simple logic

"Blackpool holiday flats" is the keyword for which the competition is more though it is long keypharse but for "holiday flats" the competition would definitely be low.

Another reason may also be possible if above one is not the case

that is you have done more seo for "holiday flats" but less for "blackpool holiday flats" so this may also be the reason

Thanks for all your help. Backlink building as I type :)

Its a bit weird but I think I am starting to understand that the number of results returned doesn't necessarily indicate the level of competition.

    Thanks.

if you analyze those two listing then you should get some good ideas what google algorithm is all about. it is about weight factor on some criteria. if you get it than you know what you should do next time when trying to find a niche to target.
