Tracking PPC Phone leads

What's the best way to track PPC phone leads?

Would generating a ref ID and asking the potential client if they had a ref ID be the best way. Anyone have any experience or advice?

    Cheers.

I've used voicestar with many clients. Some people use the method you describe, with the referral number.

I belive using an unique incoming phonenumber for each campaign you want to track would be the most effective way of doing it.

Let's say you have a rank of phonenumbers.

XXX XX 001 Used for TV advertising
XXX XX 002 Used for radio advertising
XXX XX 003 Used for internet advertising

    and so on..

I've got a separate number for the landing page.
But the homepage and contact pages have different numbers and from the analytics it shows that visitors browse the site.

I don't think most users would notice.. but if that is a big consern of you, you could always make a work around for that to.

Use different urls for the different campaigns. This will hurth your branding, but you got to give some to gain some. When a user enters the site on a spesific url, set a cookie or session in their browser. When they browse the contact page, have a script that shows the correct number. The script just checks if the user has the cookie set or not.

We had this question a while back. I would suggest a different phone number or quite simply adking callers how they found the site. Although most customers will say I found it on google, which doesnt help.
