Best blog software

I am going to create a site that is a pure blog. I've installed a few different blog software programs on sites, but never got too deep into it.

I want a blog that is simple to skin and mess with, has a clean URL option, every kind of RSS feeder, an auto pinger when I post, simple blog management, filters for spammers and such, and a magical pony that delivers me high rankings wrapped gently in gold foil.

that last part was an attempt at a crappy joke.

Which blog software would you recommend? (PHP and MySQL)

I suggest Wordpress. It may not be the easiest to skin, but I didn't think it was much harder than Blogger. I think it's by far the most flexible. It's fast, and user support is HUGE.

Wordpress does everything you mentioned except for being easy to skin. Yes! it even comes pre-loaded with the magical pony that delivers me high rankings wrapped gently in gold foil

People look to be creazy about WP, while it is only good engine.
    What is wrong with WP?
    - difficult to customize
    - creates good, but not excellent, HTML and site architecture. If that can be better, then blogs based on WP would have better SERPs
    - have problems with interface - weak interface usability, seems to be created by programmer, without proffesional design and usability cosultacy.

but anyway....WP is good engine if you do not expect something excellent. I would use it, but if you are able to make same changes you should.

I installed word press once- has every feature you could ever need, but I did not have the time or patience to mess with the skinning and chnaging teh functions to suit my needs. I spent a few hours on it and got frustrated, leaving up looking kinda half assed.

I was hoping there was something nearly as functional, but much more simple.

Sometimes I see sites that look like blogger.com sites but have their own domain. How is that done?

bogger.com gives you option to upload everything to yor ftp, and on you can then point the domain on the directory when you have files.

It is easy, and yes - blogger is easier then WP. Designed well.

But I don't recommend you blogger. I have one blog on that engine. Blogger has no categories, and always give same title i description. Using better engine you get 3 times more users

Despite my site's sloppy skin I'd still recommend WordPress. It's no harder to skin than anything else I've messed with.

I'm really starting to wonder how many threads we need to create in order to say that Wordpress is by far the best blogging platform on the face of this earth. 5? 10? 50? 100? How many will it take to show that Wordpress is the best :) Maybe Shawn should make an announcement to everyone so we don't keep creating more threads saying that Wordpress is the best :)

Wordpress, although I wouldn't know which version to suggest, as the recent improvement to version 2.0 didn't make everybody happy...

1.5 looks like the best bet until all the bugs in the latest version are fixed.

I just noticed that 2.0.1 is out. Anyone tried it?

I think WordPress because it’s what most people use for hosting blogs and there are a enormous amount of plugins that can be added. I’m going to launch my blog this week and also chose to use WP. Another good thing is the templates, good amount of different templates available.
