Which are better: subdomains or subfolders?

I am creating a web site in which I review different popular digital products (ebooks and software). I am wondering if I should place my reviews in separate subdomains or subfolders - I don't know which would be better as far as search engine optimization is concerned. Do the SE robots see subdomains as separate domains or as part of the same domain?
I would appreciate any feedback on this. Thank you very much!

Go for subdomain, if you've enough content go for both.

I agree with ruriko - they look better and once upon a time Google saw them as another domain but i dont think they do anymore...

Search engines love subdomains. IF you know anything about SEO, you know that subdomains are important. Add a subdomain and see the big traffic increase youl get

    Subdomains.

It's like a title for others to see, like a book title.

The spiders can pick up on the page easier. The less hurdles it has to jump, the better your odds.

And, this isn't known for a fact, but the spiders pick up more on pages that have keywords in the subdomains. And since it doesn't hurt anyway, do it, just to be on the safe side.

Robert, I can't strain subdomains enough.

I have many SEO books on my bookshelf and they all recommend subdomains, mainly for the reason Perry Rose posted above.

Subdomain is better, but there's a limit, you cant have 100s of subdomains, its not easy to manage. If the no is less then I'd prefere subdomains otherwise subfolders. :)

Thank you again for your suggestions. It seems that the almost unanimous consensus is that subdomains are better (unless there are 100's of them- that is not the case). I have been really helped by the feedback I have received in this Forum, and am very grateful. I have thought about subdomain vs. subfolder for quite some time and finally decided to post my question in this Forum, and received very good advice.
Again, thank you to everyone who took the time to respond!
