I have searched all over today for a system that is similar to vbulletin.org within the mods area.

As you know, you can only access the download if you have your license # added to your user account.

What I'd like is the same system but for paid members only.

    - allows anyone to view the page but requires registration/ paid membership to download files
    - the actual page allows detailed instruction etc

Anyone know of any mod? I have also seen it working on http://www.forumshelp.com/forums/f117/blue-steel-893/

Theres an in-built vBulletin feature which you can use to achieve it : 'Paid Subscriptions'.

You can add your products to your vB forum, and then when a user pays for it, you can set it to automatically grant some specific permission. (you can also set the payment to be recurring from your adminCP.)

thanks - I know about paid subs but it's more than that - more like vulletin.org and the other link:

    - guests or regular members can see the thread and post but not download (the download link would say something along the lines of "for premium members, click here to upgrade" etc

    any ideas?

You can set the permissions for that premium forum such that the special usergroup can download attachments,
while the other usergroups can't download attachments.

AdminCP -> Forum Permissions -> Select the usergroups under your premium forum one-by one
and then set the appropriate value for 'Can Download Attachments' for each.

hi - thanks again for the reply - that method looks a little messy because the "guest" just get a vbulletin message "You are not logged in or you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:" etc etc with the login form

What I want is the system that folks like vbulletin.org use and forumshelp - see :

    http://www.forumshelp.com/forums/f117/blue-steel-893/ and
    http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=171951

where all guests can view the post but only registered/ paid people can download - you don't get ugly messages here

    any ideas -- anyone ?

Guests should only get the permission message when they try to download something, but if set up right should still be able to see the post/thread in question.

You can tweak out your permission message to say something about subscriptions. Find the template that it's in and translate the phrase to english...

The usergroup permissions should be set to 'view thread' and/or 'view posts' and then turned off to actually download any of the attachments.
