Microsoft says better than Google soon Wed Mar 1, 2006 4:18 PM ET By David Lawsky PARIS (Reuters) - Microsoft will introduce a search engine better than Google in six months in the United States and Britain followed by Europe, its European president said on Wednesday. "What we're saying is that in six months' time we'll be more relevant in the U.S. market place than Google," said Neil Holloway, Microsoft president for Europe, Middle East and Africa. "The quality of our search and the relevance of our search from a solution perspective to the consumer will be more relevant," he told the Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit. full article here : http://today.reuters.com/misc/Print...60811_RTRUKOC_0_US-SUMMIT-MICROSFT-GOOGLE.xml
I have a hard time believing it.. 1.) OK there's no source or standard measure for judging relevance so it's easy to make such a claim. 2.) MSN Search seems much easier to manipulate, how can these other SE's which have years of head-start fall behind in six mos? Eric
I've tried to like MSN search. Can't get there though. I mean, it's seems way spammy and not very relevent at times.
The key here is : "What we're saying is that in six months' time we'll be more relevant in the U.S. market place than Google... Optimizations and fine tuning for us markets ?
I find it's easier to manipulate as well. I'm ranked #11 out of nearly 20 million results for one of my keywords that I didn't even try to get....lol
BTW, in your sig http://www.fsmedia.net/textlinks says -- "The requested URL /textlinks was not found on this server." I want to make $200! hehe. Eric
whoops, thanks -- we just moved our domains and I forgot to update that .htaccess file whoops! I updated it, thanks.
I'm not surprised that they might want to rattle few cages in the current climate. However 6 months is a long long time in G's world and considering the stock market situation G are bound to blow a rasberry. However,,, its very possible M has got something 'real' going on that could have big impact,,, again! They've done it before and will do it again but G has a heck of a head start.
PARIS (Reuters) - Microsoft will introduce a search engine better than Google in six months in the United States and Britain followed by Europe, its European president said on Wednesday. But being good is not enough to win the hearts and minds of consumers already dedicated to another standard. U.S. courts and the European Commission found Microsoft countered that problem by trying to kill off Netscape's browser and RealNetworks audiovisual software by bundling its competing code into Windows, violating antitrust laws. But bundling would find little purchase against Google because it lives insulated from Microsoft on the Web, unlike other applications that were easy game for the software giant as they perched directly on Windows. Holloway said that the company has no plans to integrate its search engine into Vista, the new Microsoft Windows operating system set to replace Windows XP later this year or early next year TWICE AS GOOD "Should we add a Google-like search engine but twice as good hard-core into Windows? Guess what. If we did that, I don't think a company called Google would be very happy," he said. "You've also got to a step back and say where do you integrate," he said. Microsoft will put its search engine into its widely used communications tools Windows Messenger and Hotmail. Continued ...
Yeah, they also announced they were coming out with an iPod killer about 2 years ago. http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/2125776/microsoft-lifts-curtain-portable-media-center
MSN sucks. They are really bad. Bill Gates hates Google and wants to see it dead. You can't build an amazing SE in 6 months. I don't care who you hire. Look at Google, it took time. Nothing falls from the sky. 6 months? Twice as better than Google? Believe me it won't fly. Skinny
Google have the unfortunate problem of having "ALOT OF DATA" in there indexes. Alot of which is redundant crap. I believe microsoft can deliver a more relevant search result because of that fact. Consider this 1) Google began much earlier than microsoft and as such had several stores of data which any data specialist will tell you is a recipe for disaster. Hence googles move to "big daddy" - the code name for the project of consolidating all these data stores "serps" 2) Once Googles "big daddy" stabilises they will need to go to the next level which is "data cleansing". I believe that cleaning up there data will be googles next big move. Any data administrator will agree with me that this is the next logical step once you consolidate all your datastores! 3) Only when they have the big "Clean" daddy can google really give relevant search results. Now Microsoft started later than google and as such they designed a search architecture that worked off a "big daddy" model from the beggining. They learnt from googles mistake and thus they are already ahead of them. They are going through the motions of cleansing (which is already ahead of google) and in 6mths time they will be delivering relevant searchs. This is my opinion of whats going to happen and certainly not fact. But my instinct and years of experience in the industry (it and data management) tells me that this is what is going on in the microsoft world at the moment. My moneys on microsofts end for search dominance in a years time!
Well MSN has been extremely active in spidering sites and indexing websites. My bet has always been that they are trying to increase their popularity among websites and increase their index substantially. Then they will tweak the algo when they are ready. Perhaps that time is sooner then most thought. It will certainly be interesting to watch. And knowing how Bill Gates works. He will just keep ponding away at it. Until he is number 1. Brad
Hi Bill Gate$$$ Congratulations!!! I hope your Engineers got time to read dozens of complaints I sent. Good Luck Mahesh
i think MSN will get far better in the future, but within six months? dont think so. Anyway, people say MSN is faster with indexing, but I noticed an huge increase in google bot visites for me site, while MSN bot visits are going down... currently 500 google bot a day, and only about 50 - 70 msn?
i doubt msn will beat google when it comes to giving out great results.... yes, it's quite easy to get your rankings high in MSN....
