Does Having Your URL Sig In Too Many Forums Hurt Your Rankings?

Discussion in 'General Marketing' started by Shadowplay, Mar 1, 2008.

If I put the URL to my blog/site in my sig in every forum I go into, with the intent to advertise, I will have a lot of meaningless backlinks from forums that maybe aren't relative to my site that I'm advertising.

Do all of these non-relative backlinks hurt you in the rankings or is it always the more the better when it comes to this stuff?

I don't understand how it would "hurt" your rankings?

I've not noticed anything bad from linking things from my sigs here, or elsewhere. I think that any link is a good link, though some are better then others.

The sig links are part of your 'link profile' and one part does not make a whole. The weight that Google gives to any link type is constantly changing in their algorithm. So the more balanced your link profile, the more stable your rankings.

I think that Qryztufre said it best.

"any link is a good link, though some are better then others"

I've heard this theory over the years that if you place one-way links somewhere that the search engines don't like, they will penalize you. I can't believe that's true.

If it was true, I could place links to my competitors' sites and hurt them at the search engines.

I suspect there are links that the search engines totally ignore, but I highly doubt that they hurt you.

If you exchange links with a "tainted" site, then perhaps the search engines could figure out that you are responsible for those links but I'll certainly continue taking any one-way link I can get.

I dont understand the question. Anytime, anywhere you can promote your site, forum, etc. is good. What would be bad?

There's nothing wrong with sig links, they aren't given much weight but they aren't a burden. In addition, the url can be handy for traffic if the forum is relevant to your site.

I can't imagine it hurting, considering that most interiors of forums aren't cached in google, so I can't imagine them checking in on the sigs of posters.

Do you have some points why dya think it will "hurt" your ranking? or were you just merely asking?

I agree with "any link is a good link"

Links in any kind of forum sig will not hurt your rankings, however lots of people get illusioned about how much juice a sig link really gets which is controlled by the G algo.

No it will not hurt your rankings. I've been building sig links for quite some time and i find it beneficial for my SERP.

I had heard that too many inbounds that didn't pertain to your site could hurt your ranking but maybe it's hogwash.

Yep, it shouldn't be a problem as long as you put your link in your sig and not spam the forums by including it in the actual posts of some of them unless they allow it. I don't see the point why you would want your link on unrelated forums though.
