For some reason Google has lost thousands of backlinks to my site and as a result my position in search results has dropped drastically, this happened yesterday as far as I can tell. Anybody know what's going on?

Have you try another backlink checker?

It looks as though it might have happened to one or two others as well, hopefully it'll sort itself out as I've basically lost 3/4 of my traffic.

I don't think it has anything to do with SEO right now, because google is going through an update, and it's a mess right now.

No, I haven't done anything wrong as far as I know. My website is still indexed and everything, it's just the backlinks that have disappeared.

Google periodically removes the pages, which is no importance to the visitors.
If google thinks that, the pages which might given you like, may not be important to google.
This kind of updates happens once in few months.

Whenever there's a change in the way Google ranks sites, there are going to be initial ups and downs. If a good proportion of sites linking to you go down, then the number of back links to you will drop. In turn, this then repeats through to sites that you link to and so on.
A similar thing has happended to me before and I wasted a lot of time trying to work out why. Once the changes settled down, everything eventually returned to a similar state.
If your backlinks are from good quality sites, sit-tight and they'll bounce back. Chances are that your competitors are going through a similar upheaval, so you might not lose out, you might even gain.

I have noticed that I have lost about 50% of backlinks to some of my sites, when doing the usual link:www.websiteURLhere.com search. However, my SERPs are remaining the same, so hopefully, Google was just disregarding backlinks that it thinks are unimportant.

No, I was just using the link:domain.com query. It's definitely had an effect on my site as I've lost about 3/4 of my traffic.

I have seen the same on some of my sites, the links have disappeared or been disregarded, though the position drops have only happened on 1 site. I have though checked out alot of competition and this seems to be happening across there sites also.

Seems to of dropped alot of irrevelent links, recripicals (which have been snuck through) also mutiple links in the same site.

Seems to me just a cleaning up of the backward links.
