PayPal Security Key : Do you have one? What do you think?

Discussion in 'General Chat' started by GreenGambler, Feb 27, 2008.

I just now found out that PayPal offers a security key for added protection.

Even though I am very disappointed recently with PayPal in the way they handle some things related to scammers, I am happy to see this new security key they are offering.

    Check it out Here: https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=xpt/cps/securitycenter/general/PPSecurityKey-outside

I am going to order mine first thing when I wake up tomorrow, it's only $5. How could I refuse the added protection to my account and a new, cool keychain.. :)

It also works with Ebay and they are partnering with VeriSign so that it can be implemented on a number of websites around the world.

I would love it if this device worked for all of my websites that I log into, including NamePros, DP, MySpace and everything else. Wouldn't it be great if they all agree to use this device and make it even cheaper for their members! (Although 5 bucks is pretty cheap IMO)

It says the $5 price tag is intoductory and I believe it, better get yours now.

I really think this will do well, what are your opinions? Is it hackproof? Do you think it's a step in the right direction?

I did search that section and found a few old threads mentioning the service.

I just thought it would reach alot more people in this part of the forum, people who don't check out the Payment Processing section very often.

I really hope this thing takes off and want to spread the word as much as possible.

This kind of added security key is really a necessity given the increase in on line frauds and phishing attacks on many gullible users. Hope it would be compatible with all the sites as the time moves on. Thanks for sharing the info with the rest of the dpers :)

I agree, this is a great thing for non-computer-savy people to have, or just people who want extra protection or a new cool keychain, lol.

I've already made my Mother and stepdad order one since they do have a PP account but know little about phishing and security.

Here is another, older, article about the security key: http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/06/15/paypal-using-verisign-tokens_1.html

I just can't believe it's been around since Feb. 07 and I'm just now hearing about it. Even after all my calls to PP about security issues and domain scamming, they never once told me about this thing.

I just ordered mine... It said it would be at my house within 10 days. I wonder why some people can't order it? I guess it is only a US, or verified account thing for now... I'm not sure.

It generates a new 6-digit number every 30 minutes.

When you log into PayPal/Ebay/VeriSign sites, you have to press the button on the key and see what the currently displayed 6-digit code is.

You then type the 6-digit code along with your usual password and username to log in to any of those sites.

Nobody will be able to access your account without the number, even if they have your password and user name.

Ohh wow, I thought it was every 30 minutes, seconds is even better!

Anyone know how they keep in tune with the codes at PayPal home office? Like, how does it know that the code on the keychain is the same as the one you typed? Are they synchronized with the equipment at PP headquarters before they get shipped or do they give off a signal or what?

Has anyone else got theirs yet?

I should have gotton mine in the mail today, it will be the 11th business day since I ordered. It wasn't there, so hopefully I'll get it tomorrow. I called PP, worried that it got lost but they assured me that it is on it's way. They said that they have been getting bombarded with orders.

BTW: I emailed GoDaddy asking them to contact VeriSign and PayPal so that they can include and use this key on there site too. I would LOVE to add this security to my domain name account.

Also, here is a video I found with the president of PP on YouTube.
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=OQi88UJn22M

And here is a very informative video from a PP team member.
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=VzIQRL7zOAM

Also, if you loose it you will get a bunch of personal, pre-set security questions to answer, so you won't be locked out.. which is nice.

Local banks use things like that to give you a key to enter online banking, pretty messy sometime...
5 bucks for a hip keychain, i'm gonna have it!!!

    Edit:
This keychain has something inside that calculates the code, and at the same time the same code is being generated at paypal, if so, i don't think it will be long until it will get hacked :)
I think that is the way because, it's to hard to make this little thing contact vie satellite.

    Edit2:
The Security Key is currently not available. Please try again later.
    :) :)
