Whitehat Link Development

Would somebody be able to outline the most effective whitehat methods of link development? Would be very appreciative... +rep coming your way.

I'd say: "Obey to The Ten Commandments of Link Building." Do note that the commandments are not ranked in order of effectiveness! I think that the effectiveness depends more on you than on the "commandment" you use. Directory submissions, exchanging links and social-bookmarking are seemingly easy, but often not effective, because people submit their website, blog or article to the wrong (i.e. not-related) directory or link exchange website or to the wrong (niche group within a) social-bookmarking website.

 

This isn't the answer you want to hear, but creating unique rich quality content is the "best" method to build backlinks. Why else would someone link to your website unless there was something useful or entertaining there? Most sites for major competitive keywords have a lot of "natural" one-way backlinks. You main goal should be marketing to increase traffic while creating great content.

 

So quality content would itself create back links?

 

Good directories link could be considered as White hat links,

 

thanks ssand, it wasn't the answer I wanna hear because I might be doing work for an seo firm that only abides by whitehat...so the sites most likely will already have decent content.

 

I would consider link bait, as a white hat SEO technique. Make a useful tool, or write an interesting article. Then watch people link to your site.

I think a quality directories, social book markings, and posting on related forums is white hat technique make sure that you would not spam.

Quality content, smart marketing techniques, and being different is the key.

Here's a short article about Link Baiting for Ecommerce Websites, it will give you some creative ideas to apply to non-ecommerce sites also.

 

I've received excellent results from using press release services. In fact, I am starting to test this even more. It definitely can't hurt as there are free services out there and they are fairly quick and easy to write.

The one I've used in the past is PR Web, though I am currently experimenting with others.

That's a great one! Actually, that is where a lot of my blog traffic comes from. You've just reminded me to do that for my niche sites as well

 

Sometimes link building seems hopeless.. like for example the keyword: wow gold. The first site on the SERP is around 200,000 links. Don't see how anyone can compete with that?

It doesn't matter in the number of links that they have, it's the quality of those links. There could be 50,000 pagerank 0 sites linking to him and the link value of that is 0!

 

50,000 pagerank 0 sites wouldn't have a value of 0. Everyone would've started off as PR0 - how could they have advanced?

 

I think you're wrong (big time unfortunately). PR's influence on SERP is greatly overestimated (don't need to have high PR to be in top5 in Google). Backlinks count no matter if they are from PR0 or PR6 sites (those from PR0 just don't pass PR). Although you'll need more low-quality (from pages with content unrelated to your linked page) links to achieve good results, having high enough quantity of such links would boost your site in SERP. If you can acquire links from pages with related content do so - these links are valued by Google.

Hm. No. Quality content comes first, promoting it comes second. That promotion could be simply mailing prominent sites in your niche that you exist and asking for a link, or getting people on stumbleupon to link to it, or to be active in a relevant forum and having your site in your signature - or getting your offline network working: getting people or niche-organisations to link to you.

But none of those things will get you visitors unless your content is good.

Personally I do content creation all year around and link-building less often. It amounts to just mailing the right people. General promotion is more a matter of being active online (all year around roughly) in forums, on squidoo, on myspace, stumbleupon, finding blogs in your niche, having a newsletter etc.
