Wordpress Domain AddOn Question

Can someone explain how you set up your second independent domain name using wordpress on Bluehost using one main account.

I already have one wordpress blog up and running. Now I just bought another domain from them and want to start a totally separate blog.

My question is the first blog basically set it self up using Fantastico because it was the main account on Bluehost. Having trouble figuring out how to set up the second domain using wordpress in the same manner though? Do you not use Fantastico again?

I have done the addon domains part and kept it as a totally separate blog, but I just do not get how you now upload it to wordpress independently from the original blog?

    Make Sense?

You should be able to install wordpress on the addon domain via fantastico, I always could. If you can't, you can just manually install it in the folder of your addon domain. Eg, public_html/addondomain.com

If you have multiple domains you should now have an option to choose what domain to install WordPress on.

Ugh! I know I am doing something stupid, but I can not get it to work.

    Where is this option located?

I have tried to create the public_html/addondomain.com, but it does NOT allow me to create a separate wordpress blog via Fantastico.

Wordpress isn't difficult to install yourself... you might want to just upload the latest release of WP to you add-on domain, create the mySQL database, and run install...

after all it IS the famous 5 minute install :D

Usually you can't use Fantastico for this. Not sure why, it just doesn't play nice with add-on domains. Save yourself the trouble and install Wordpress manually, which only takes 5 minutes.

Fantastico- wordpress- new installation- it asks you for the name of the domain to install wp on.

First you need to host the addon domain and let the control panel create the directory for it.

With cPanel you can then use Fantistico to install the script. Pretty sure you have to point it to the subdomain.

addondomain.primarydomain.com because all the addons are treted like subs.

Once you host the domain the conrol panel will show you your options.

    Ugh!

Can not get anything to work! I have a support ticket going with BlueHost now, but it is almost like no one understands what I am asking.

All I want is to have 2 separate WordPress domains under one hosting account which I thought was the purpose of using addon domains? Am I the one who is confused?

    1. So let me ask do all of you guys who have more than one WordPress Blog do you not use addon domains?
    2. Do you just use separate hosting accounts for each domain instead of addons?

Just seems like there should be a simple answer.

    Thanks,

    Chad

I'm quoting my answer again because it answers your question. :)

On your main domain, you can use Fantastico just fine to install WP. But it won't work on addon domains, so you have to install WP manually. I can't explain why and I've never heard of a reason for this, but that's just how it goes. (Typical support replies will just repeat what others said here, and won't get you anywhere, so good luck with that.)

My advice is still the same: don't waste time with something that doesn't work. Just install manually.

I have 3 WP blogs hosted in addon domains and all of the were installed using Fantistico. The major advantage of installing this way is that upgrades are quick and easy.

When you are trying to install through Fantastico what does it say in the drop down list for the section titled, "Install on domain"? Does it have your 1st domain and your 2nd domain (add-on)? or does it have your 1st domain and tilteofyour2nddomain.1stdomain.com (2nd domain as subdomain)? In either case you can successfully install wordpress by choosing the 2nd domain.

    It has all three:

    1stdomain.com
    2nddomain.1stdomain.com
    2nddomain.com

I have tried both the second and third options, but both come back with an error:

    Install WordPress (2/3)

The installation can not be completed:

    - You chose to install in the main directory of the domain 2nddomain.com, but there are conflicting filenames, therefore we can not proceed. Following filenames already exist in the main directory of the domain 2nddomain.com (path="/home/1stdomainlogon/public_html/wp-admin/").You must manually remove these files before proceeding with auto-installation:
    index.php

Click on the browser's Back button to fix reported errors.

However, I can not find any files related to the 2nd domain?????

    Ok update:

I had someone else look into this for me because I thought I was going crazy:

When trying to create a new directory for the addon domain not matter what is put into the public_html/addon directory it always points to the original domain instead of the new directory.

So I have submitted another ticket with BlueHost.

Let me know if someone else has had a similar issue.

Just a final update for anyone else who may have this problem:

It was an issue with the Hosting. Once they fixed it on their end I was able to use Fantastico to put up the second Wordpress addon domain.

    Thanks for the help,

    Chad

in case someone else has a similar problem, I tired following the directions to "delete" the files, but they just kept coming back. Only way I could fix it was to rename the folders. Just put up a post on my blog on how to do it here:
