Changed hosting and SERPS drop?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by gordano, Feb 23, 2008.

A week ago I changed hosting from a .COM to a .UK company/IP to try and improve UK serp results - as UK is the target market.

The upshot is that the UK serps have droped along with traffic. Having been top 3 for several keywords the site is now low on google page 1, and sometimes on page 2 or 3.

Has anyone else had experience of changing host companies with this impacting serps?

Did you move the hosting from US to UK?

Or... did you change the domain (like from .com to .co.uk?) <- that would certainly affect serp :D

i think he transfer from us hosting to uk hosting...

i think it would affect your serp.. since google.com.uk search engine is different from google.com (us).

am i right? correct me if i'm wrong.

    to be clear:

hosting was with a USA hosting company, this changed to a UK hosting company.

the serps changes have been noticed on google.co.uk

    :)

I've done the exact same, for the same reason (targetting UK market).

I noticed a drop too to start with, but it recovered to higher than it was originally when searched on google.co.uk so I think you have made the right decision, just bear with it and continue with your seo work.

Interesting point jg abad ... I thought of this risk when repointing the domain to the new hosting.

On checking toolbar I can see the last cached page was around 14 hours after I insitgated the host change (pages pre loaded onto new hosting and then repointed the domain). As google does not visit my site more than once every few days (based on cached page) it seems like tihs was not the issue.

I was wondering if anyone else had changed hosting and seen an adverse reaction.

Vic, thanks for your comments, how long did it take for serps to bounce back? Looks like google has something in its algo that doesnt like hosting changes? ... albeit a temporary effect

I think in my case after about a week of the change I slipped in the rankings, stayed lower for about 2 weeks, then returned to my old spot. About a week later I climbed higher than I had been before. Bear in mind these are rough times, I didnt keep note of it. And it will vary depending on site and other seo work anyway.

i changed hosting once and my ranking shot up to the top being 2nd for a very competitive keyword. went down to same ranking couple of weeks later. there was no other reason for the ranking change as i have done nothing for that site for some time now. only thing i did in a long time is to change host

Thanks for this. I was thinking that perhaps it's just a temporal hiccup.

gordano - keep us informed how the thing goes. it's been one week already... perhaps second week comes with a cure

I did the same and the rankingsdropped for a while - 2 weeks? and then massively improved.
