I believe the best way to lower the ocean would be to build huge lakes in the middle of the deserts where we find the starving people of the world... These lakes would have ocean water pumped up to them filtering out the salt creating a fresh water lake with smaller lakes built beteen the huge lake and ocean the smaller lake could be use for fish and shell fish farming . Then having a canal running from the huge lake back to the ocean... every 100 miles a dam would be built to create power to run the pumping stations while also creating electric for close by cities... Around this huge lake the ground soil would become fertile and could grow crops and raise cattle... The link in my sig explains more...
I think it is an impossible project. More energy will be spent by bringing the water in the middle of the desert, than the power produced by the dams(this is sure thing) and the ground soil can't become fertile by itself because desertification is an irreversible process as far as I know.
Reading what Algert said above i'm not sure if it would be possible either. But you have an amazing idea!
Raising of ocean is due to the melting of glaciers. We should try to address the melting problem of glaciers instead of lowering the level of ocean by pumping water into the desert. How? Prevent or retard the global warming by cutting down emission. Are developed economies ready to take the bait? Purification of salt water through reverse osmosis is another energy hungry process. Building large dams will definitely help people but there are mixed opinions about it among the environmentalists since it impedes the free flow of water. The solution? Use the available water judiciously and cut down the emission. Half the problem is solved. Then we can think of other developmental works
Icebergs meting does not affect sea level at all, everyone thinks it does but it has nothing to do with it.
I have a more economical solution than a multi hundred-trillion dollar effort - and it doesn't lead to to ruining the desert ecology and destroy the desert biosphere. By switching the world to Nuclear Power, and then using the technology to bind Co2 to other chemicals for refining it can be done for just billions, not millions. Eventually the air scrubbing would decrease the temperature, and finally when we reach the sustainable point the bound chemicals can be processed into gasoline again. A better idea - burying the chemicals that trapped the Co2 or turning it into fertilizer and relying on electric highways and electric solutions powered by the huge nuclear facilities that I wish to see. It will be a Nuclear Future, and will lead to better methods of power processing and even the harnessing of radioactivity and conversion of that into electricity along with the excess heat being efficiently used for mechanical energy using Sterling Technology. I'm talking about a more than 70% efficency, whereas today we get about... 30 from a nuke plant. The heat that is pumped into cooling towers could be pumped into a massive sterling facility that would then power the sterling engines in mass, and lead to more electrical generation and less waste of heat energy - since sterlings run off of heat differentials. Eventually I could decrease your power payments to something that mirrors the abundant energy that would be available. This is why you need me for World Dictator.
Of course icebergs don't. They displace their weight. What does is Antarctica melting. Antarctica is a land mass with two mile thick ice on top - so heavy it actually pushes the land down into the earth. If we lose Antarctica we can see the 150 foot rise in sea level, and then Colorado will have better access to the Ocean. However, I do not wish to see Antarctica melt - there is too much that could be frozen in that ice that I could use. Who knows what samples of past creatures could be locked in the ice, or what bacteria and virii. Who knows what could be in the ice - even frozen ancestors to long extinct animals that could be brought back with genetics, tons of information. It must be guarded, protected, and then slowly studied from the inside out through ice mines. If it melts the information will be lost and the greed that is the human virus will corrupt it, drill it, rape it, ruin it, destroy it. It would also serve as an excellent area to launch spacecraft since less effort will be needed in keeping liquid nitrogen and oxygen cold, along with the immediate cooling with the rocket itself.
The water would change the climate as a cooling factor. As far as the electricity produced... Do you know how much electric power hover dam puts out? ( 565 million kilowatt hours per year. ) Smaller Dams pumping water http://www.usbr.gov/lc/hooverdam/parkerdam.html Hover Dam power out put... http://www.howstuffworks.com/hydropower-plant.htm More on Hover Dam http://www.physics.umd.edu/perg/abp/aha/hoover.htm
That has been a problem for some time. The only solution would be the application of the theories of relativity. Time dilation, for one...
The whole beauty of this is: Because it is the people with money and power that own all the beach front properties.... As the ocean level keeps rising the rich and powerful property owners stand to lose hundreds of billions of dollars in real estate... Save the Rich while you feed the Hungry... http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/29/science/earth/29habi.html?pagewanted=print http://www.worldviewofglobalwarming.org/pages/rising-seas.html
i think that we should look for a solution for the global warming first by finding and using more clean source of energy
We can accelerate the development of fusion reactors that can provide us a near infinite source of energy, this will cut down on the traditional power generating methods and save the fossil fuels and lessen CO2 emissions. But I do not know if it would be too late now.
