I have always argued here that trying to increase earnings by using the filter is counter-productive (I blogged about it way back in 2005). It decreases the number of advertisers competing for space on your websites, so your revenue goes down.

sometimes it is not about trying to get better rankings but get content out of the way which is triggered by the keywords but has nothing to do with it. Example (not real but to get the point: you do have a site about handicap for golf and you get all kinds of hits in your adsense for handicapped people. )

I for example also filter sites if I see them who sell subscription services if you just sign up for a newsletter. I do not care how much they pay, I dont want visitors of my site going into these traps.

So CPM has nothing to do with your filtered sites ?

I use the filter to bar sites I think are cr*p. If you direct visitors to dodgy sites, ones you wouldn't go near yourself, I think it's immoral.

I tried that, my filter list is full of common MFA'ers. When I deleted my list it increased the eCPM by ALOT for about a week, then went back to less then what it was with it in place.

So I'll just keep my crap MFA advertisers blocked :)

yeah that's what I am scared of . Well I'll keep it hat way for another week and see if keeps the good click rate if not I'll go back to add filter and block the crap. But any way today I have about 60 clicks and $ 12 dollars , that's not bad at all .
But for auto, car related site should be a little better I guess ?

filtered sites do have of course have something to do with your cpm in regards of that google would provide you with the high clickers and punish them already without.

i also filter out sites which are unlikly to be clicked. in my case for example a shopping provider who is - when you look at his site - so bad bad bad, that nobody is going to shop the product from there. it does not need to take up a spot. in such a case, i make the conscious decision not to include them.

Filtering ads is not a good thing if you want to improve your CPM. Adsense displays ads that earn you the most money; if you filter them, you lose money. This tool was meant to be used for filtering competitors ads, not for improving CPM.

It actually goes like this. Usually MFA ads are very catchy and if you filter them you may get less number of clicks than if you didn't. But at the same time if you remove those crap ads there is a chance that the click you get is a quality click with say more cost per click you may indeed get more money. My experiance is filtering decreases CPM. It must be different for different people. Try yourself to find which suits you more.

Sometimes you should need the ads filter. The story is that my site has a huge traffics (games site), since I updated my adsense ads code, the CPM falled from $1.xx to $0.xx and some times $0.0x (oops). And the ads from smiley websites appear very ugly, I didn't try to filter ads, but I changed my adsense code to old version (backed up version). Smiley websites' ads no more appeared, and the CPM were $1.xx (and till now).
With this point, I think ads filter in some circumstance is good!.
P/s: Anyone has same CPM with me when update the adsense ads code?

So is filtering good or not?

I tried filtering any my eCPM dropped!

When, I removed the filter, it recovered.

But, I am willing to try it agian.

What is the basis for filtering... MFA, affiliate site, toplist?

I think I had already answered to that:
There are some cases when filtering is good (for MFAs usually... and competitors, of course), but, as my own experience and the google adsense guidellines says, you should keep you filter list as clean as you can. Don't filter too many sites, you could lose serious money.

Different people have different experience to tell about the adsense filters. It doesn't work exactly in a similar manner for every one. My advice is try it for a while (up to 15 days or at the most one month) and see the difference in the earning and then stick to the one which is better! :)
