My experience is different, i am working on site related mobile communication. It was a merchant sites for more than 1 year. This site was good performing, it was on top rank on many keywords in Google, but now it is an affiliate site. It have lost its ranking and fall down traffic very much. I think a no. of out going link is very much important to care about.

Thinking back to my first web-site and the beginners mistakes I made, it was getting my on-page seo right that made the first difference that I really noticed - getting my headers and titles sorted out, well-placed keywords...getting those basics right.

I really can't choose just one. I would go with one way inbound links and content. I have heard that if content is king, then links are the Queen and I would agree with that.

In the other category I would add site structure as being very important. I have a relatively new site with almost no inbound links and it is already ranking in the top 20 for various keywords in its niche, and I attribute that to the site structure that I used with it and the file names I used.

You can do all the SEO you want on a website. Unless it has unique, well written content, then you won't really do much.

Without creating your own content, what seperates your site from all the MFA sites and crap that fills the internet ??

SEO is definately an important aspect of any website, but I think its worth spending time creating unique content first, and then applying SEO to it.

How is content not the number one voted option in this poll? I don't care how well you optimize a website, without unique quality content you won't see page 50 in Google.

Yes, you need some content, that goes without saying, but from what I found the number one thing that helps with SERPS is links with anchor text for your keyword. It doesn't even matter if the link comes from a related site as long as their link page is cached and has a good internal linking strategy.

You lost all creditability with your post with this simple sentance. Relevant backlinks out weight by FAR non-relevant links.

I'm not saying there is zero weighting differance but what do you mean "by FAR"? What I'm saying is inbound links is by far the most important even if they are from non-related sites.

If a wedding planning site has a link to a limousine company is that relavant? It may not seem like it but yes they are. if a porn site has a link to a company that makes screws is that relavant? Of courese not. If a towing company in in Portland has a link to a towing company in Pitsburg, is that releavant? No, it's completely useless to a user. How does google know the difference. There's an infinite number of seeming irrelavant topics that are indeed relavent and the other way around.
