    From a SEO point of view, is it better to build a site using div tags or tables? can it effect you search engine rankings?

    div tags are better than table as there will be less codes on the page and the loading time will also decrease

    Div tabs for lots of reason

    1) Search engines calculates the text to coding ration, meaning the less code you have the better, doing tables requires more coding then simply using divs

    the 2 other reasons are not related to SEO but still...

    2) You probably all heard that one before but table should only be use for tabular data and not use has a design tools. When using them for you make you page heavier then it should be, use CSS

    3) Make your site for the future, tables have a poor rendering ratio on a mobile phones, they dont go at the right place and your layout get all screwed up. Who cares about mobile phone ? You should, its part of the future and going against progress is intelectual suicide :) by the way google is investing in creating more mobile friendly tools...
