I was wondering, will Google and the other SEs penalize your site in the SERPs just because your host fumbles and has downtime? I only noticed for a few sites of mine, that the server had problems...been about 40 hours with the problem. I wonder if this will affect the SERPs even after the hosting problems have been restored?
Will only effect you if your site is down when your site is due to be crawled, it wont be found which aint a good thing. Do yourself a favour and get a more reliable hosting company.
40 hours is a lot of down time, get your host to fix the problem else you would end up loosing not only the traffic that is coming your way, but ranking in search engines as well!
I think I'd rather not mention the host name because to be honest, they are quite a good host so far except for the recent problems. But if this happens again.....of course...everyone deserves to know so that they can avoid this host. Right now, the problem is fixed....I hope it's nothing major. But, any hosts you can recommend that is cheap and good for reseller accounts? I seem to have gotten some good rankings on the server IP of this host in spite of the recent problems...(for last year they were good)...so I think that is a factor as well in choosing hosts? (Of course, if they keep going down like this, no way anyone can get good SERP rankings like that...) Not sure.
I don't think it would effect your serps. anyway does it matter to you if you have high ranking but your potential customer can't get to see what you have to offer?
You may get temporary hickups, but that's it. You will get back very soon once the site gets up. Infact few hours downtime don't cause any problem, atleast to me.
Server ip wouldn’t have any impact on rankings, but if you are paranoid about it, you can easily get a dedicated ip address from the host. As for new host, check out www.knownhost.com, I have been hosting (reseller) with them for over a year and they are fantastic.
Yes if the server keeps going down then it will have a negative impact on your serps if your real unlucky it can even get you deindexed if its down to many times.
I just recently had 4 1/2 Days downtime, fortunately my site was solid enough it didn't budge.. However another of my servers went down that had newer sites and they were effected pretty bad.
A competitor of mine is a very old and trusted site and company. They now have 404 displayed as their title after a few bad days. For most search terms they are screwed But for their domain name they kept their rank (which was competitive enough) I cannot think of a single factor which is more important
Yep, and in addition, extensive downtimes will hurt your business in many other ways, since visitors can't access you site in the downtime as well, bookmarkers may think it's gone and delete the bookmark, etc. Hosting is the basement your whole business is built on, so any additional money invested in a solid quality host/server will pay back many times in the future. 40 hours simply means you should run and find a new host as soon as possible, they either don't know their business or don't care for their customers in my opinion.
Nah that one was definitely not intentional, the server was in such bad shape that's how long it took to copy the HD across to another server. The rankings didn't move which surprised me, i thought the ranking for SEO would of dropped to page 3 at least. Some newer sites on that server dropped though, one lost the homepage cache but they slowly returned. So it appears more solid/established sites get a bit more grace before things go sour.
I would say it is extremely doubtful given about 1 in 5 of the top 3 results in a google search are generally 404 or completely dead.
I had a site take a hit in google due to hosting downtime. It was too much of a coincidence for it not to be hosting related.
