Is there some super secret hack to uploading everything and runing the upgrade script in 60 seconds?!!!!! I've tried uploading the zip file and unziping it using SSH, but it just generates errors on the board! I can only get them to work if all the files are uploaded one at a time through ftp, and then run the upgrade script!!! And that takes more like 10-15 minutes!!!!
Yeah that was quickly.. I saw a link in VB admin to upgrade the software.. shouldn't it be as simple as just click the link and that's it?
Here's my process... Upload new files to a separate directory on the server make any modifications to them (in my case there is 1 PHP file and 2 JavaScript files that need to be changed for my mods). Shut down public access Copy new files (which have already been modified if needed) to the public web folder... cp -R /newfiles/* /public_html_folder Go through upgrade process Enable public access Then your down time is minimal (files don't need to be uploaded while the board is shut off for example).
Shawn, why all forums have "Powered by Vbulletin" and DP has this: "vBulletin v3.5.4, Copyright ©2000-2006, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd." in the footer? Also will you install vbseo or something else to make urls static, or do you think it's useless? thanks
Because I changed it. No... I don't have any need for vbseo. The URLs are already static (they don't change). If you mean make them so they look like .html files with the title in the URL, I could care less about that. Makes the URLs confusing and ugly IMO.
If you changed it then I guess you paid additional cost for this, which is around $100 or so, then why didn't you remove it at all... Interesting point actually.. You say there's no need for all these seo features in vbulletin. So you don't recommend this for all forums, or is it just because you have a this great old domain?
I've seen forums that are using this and no doubt it might be helping younger, less populated ones try to capture more traffic, but the URLs do tend to go a bit tautological. And it's not like DP needs the help in getting ranked ...
I didn't pay for it... you are allowed to alter the wording of the copyright message, just as long as you don't remove it. The change I made is compliant with their rules. I didn't say there is no need for them. Just depends on who you ask. For me SEO benefit does not outweigh the ugly URLs.
I use VBSEO on both my websites and find it very useful. Many more features other than just the url rewrites which I love. To each their own.
hey dude I'm on DSL too, it's also 1.5M! Same for me, I believe vbseo is helping new sites.. before I started using it, my forum wasn't indexed well, only urls, no descriptions, now it's fine
MG do you run Vbbulletin? I was think of doing so but am not a programmer and couldn't hack my way out of a wet paper bag. Feedback?
The new way of hacking vBulletin uses a method that eliminates the "hacking" that used to be necessary for most hacks. You can now install most modifications as plug ins from the admin control panel. Nice clean and easy.
