Vendors Be Careful when selling using Paypal and GoDaddy

    Hi Folks,

there has unfortunately been a large amount of fraud in the last few days with a few users whom appear to have had their accounts hacked, buying domains and then reversing their paypal transactions.

As the perpetrators of this fraud appear to be using good, respected and well + Itrader'd accounts it is very difficult to detect any fraud in advance.

Basically: as a domain transfer is for a non tangible good, paypal will always return the funds to the buyer if they add a dispute to their transaction. It may take up to 60 days to do this if you disagree with the dispute, but paypal will always return the money.

Also, GoDaddy who are the most popular domain registrar, will never enter into discussion about fraudulently obtained domain names, as in their opinion if you sent it and you were authorised to do so, it is your responsibility not theirs.

Both of the above companies have every right to take their stance, but because of this a few members (including myself) have been caught out in the last few days.

SO BE CAREFUL WHEN SELLING YOUR DOMAINS!

My advice would be if you are using GoDaddy and its more than say $100, or at least if its more than you could afford to lose, then use a different service like moneybookers, and for goodness sake if its an amount more than $500 then use escrow.com or a similar service.

Please dont start posting suspected fraudsters usernames in this thread, that is NOT the point in this, but please be extra vigilant over the next few days/weeks when carrying out transactions.

Above all, remember, if you are being offered a price that seems to good to be true, it most probably is!

You're very welcome mate, lets try and get this stickied for at least a week or two....

but as a vendor then you are covered from fraudulent chargebacks...

this thread is designed to protect vendors from fraudster buyers - which for some reason seems to have exploded in popularity in the last 3 days.

But GoDaddy lets you reverse your domain transfer for up to 15 days, more than enough time to withdraw your money from PayPal.

no they dont, they might *say* that but if you ever try it and confirm to them that you actioned the transfer then they will not get involved.

if you say that you NEVER actioned the transfer then they will atleast investigate the claim, but if your IP is the normal one or at least close to normal Im putting money on the fact they wont return the domains.

There is documented evidence of this in a few other threads here at the moment.

as per above, its not likely that they will reverse it, especially as you were authorised to make the push from your account. from a legal standpoint it is not their responsibility to make sure that you dont get scammed.

GoDaddy are a great registrar and my bone is NOT with them, I think their service is great, but the scammers are using this loophole to defraud me, you and many other DP members.

Does this mean there are scammers breaking into reputable peoples accounts, and using them to make the deals?
In that case, I wonder if it would be a good time to start a massive campaign to do with password complexity and protection? xP
I wonder if Google checkout would cover this better at all, there is considerably better seller protection there, I'll have to have a look.

deamn scammers, it seems to more and more of them

I also thought that godaddy might let you reverse your push for 15 days, but I can see now that the case is different

Nope, GoDaddy let you think that you can, and then wont let you unless there is striking evidence that it's not a scam.

It would "appear" so... the two accounts that have tried to scam me (and have succesefully scammed others both have 1,500+ posts (real ones) and 20+ iTraders - HOWEVER both of the accounts hadnt actually posted an Itrader for 10-12 months, so it is possible that it was a dormant account someone has sold/hacked etc. etc. basically, just checking the iTraders isnt protection enough, you also have to apply some serious thought when you are doing a PP/GD transaction.

Im not sure, let us know if you find any!
