Yesterday, one of the network sites got slashdotted. The results makes a good case study in targeting and its huge importance. If you want to make money in this business you simple have to target the readers better.

Read the effects targeting had on my slashdot results here.

Awesome to see you got slashdotted Moto.

That will provide you with some wicked traffic, just reading your results now. But I do know that getting slashdotted is not the easiest thing :)

We get slashdotted an average to 2 to 4 times a month. Just not all of them results in this magnitude of clicks. Slashdot tends to post news stories rather than reviews. For us, reviews are always better because we have matching shopping links for everything we review. A news story is harder to target.

At the risk of showing my ignorance, what is slashdotted?

    Thanks.

Most of the slashdots are spread across 3 to 4 network sites. Slashdot looks for unique news stories or unigue gadgets. Some of the news stories we got slashdotted to was an editorial on China beating up on Yahoo and how to get free stuff at a trade show. It's kinda fun seeing what they will post. There has been time when I did a story and thought "This has slashdot written all over it" and they don't post it.

Just wondering, did you submit the slashdot entry your self or did an article to your site suddently appear?

Generally, I submit the stories myself. However, there are times when my readers beat me to it.

Nice, thanks for the information Moto,

May have to look into doing some manual slashdot submissions more often.
