The word "ad" may prompt some not to click on the ad thinking it will result in the site owner getting paid. They might not think the same with the word "sponsored" in its place.

I totally agree that the word "ad" and "sponsored by Google" or "your site here" or anything would result in people not clicking -- but not for the reason that the site ower is getting paied :p

I will not click on any ads when im looking on sites, as i know they will take me off the site im looking at, and usally onto one that will only be interested in selling somthing.

So, yeah, changing it from "ads by Goooooogle" to "sponsored by Google" may look better - but doubt it will get more clicks as its still ads. People on here are mainly increasing clicks by making their ads look like content.

I think they should get rid of the whole line. I hate to see that "Gooooogle" thing. Really. I wish they would remove it and the world would be so much better. People would click the ads more, webmasters would earn more, advertisers would receiver a higher visitor count and Google would benefit most from it, I guess. AdBrite actually hasn't got such a line, if I remember right.

i think it's kind of an ethical issue that there should always be an indication that users know that they are clicking on ads. it'll be deceitful if there isn't, and there might be lawsuits from fanaticals.

on the other hand, i remember adbrite doesn't have such a line.................

I think it will make some difference. Because I have seen that some people are always hesitant to click on "ads". And when they realize that what they want to click on is an ad, they don't do it.

I guess the main point of issue is that it will lead to a lot more non-converting clicks as far as advertisers are concerned.

the ads aren't part of the site.. and users notice that.. they click because they are interest and not by mistake.

Saying 'sponsored by google' wouldn't really make much sense because they are not 'sponsored by google'. Each link comes from an induvidual advertiser. And do you think people really notice the word 'ad'? Its a two letter word thats at the bottom of the adverts. I find it very unlikely that it would make even one scrap of difference.

I'm sure Google's been testing and the Goooooooogle works well for them. They seem to go by numbers in everything they do.

I concur. However most advertising companies make lookalike ads these days, yahoo, textlinkads etc. We need a new format :)

What I think could increase ctr is if the "Ads by Goooogle" text was aligned to the right instead of the left, like the text on some Yahoo ads are.

Since we read from left to right people wouldn't notice the "Ads by G.." text as much and read the ad text immediately (specially if the ad is in the right hand column), but it would still be there to tell people the links are ads.

I've just read someone saying "this will not make a change in the CTR"

OF COURSE IT WILL. I run two things on my pages: AdSense and Comission Junction. I got 97 CJ clicks where I got 2 AdSense clicks. I am pretty damn sure that one could definitely increase the CTR without all that fixed advertising. People are already blind about them anyway, most people locate the ad section and simpy remove it out of their sight, virtually.
