My girlfriend's laptop has Vista on it and it hogs all the resources - I don't like it. I have the option to upgrade for free any time I want, but I am sticking with XP for as long as I can.

If I buy a new laptop, I will demand that it has XP on it.... if the manufacturer won't do that and only offers Vista, I will find a different manufacturer to buy from.

Considering no one mentioned so far that it is vulnerable to any of that, the guy until you replied was being humored for being an ass.

Your 1st article is from 2006, oddly enough, the first response to that Digg link says it all -"The article basically says that if you don't have an antivirus under Vista, and you're running a third party email client, and you run the worms by clicking on the file you got in a mail, the system will get infected. Well, did anyone really expect Vista to be completely virus-proof, even if you infect it yourself?"
So basically you have to be really stupid in this scenario to get infected.

The 2nd article says that, "Experts say Windows Vista may still be susceptible to hackers". Of course one can take the "may' bit as in, "It may rain tommorrow". Know any OS that is hacker-proof, btw? Also, the only vulnerability in that article dealt with Office 97, not Vista directly. Also, one of the experts also said - "The heap management system's been improved, so it's going to be a lot harder to exploit vulnerabilities," he says. "Not impossible, but a lot harder."

Vista Sp1 has just been released but isnt available in windows update yet ! I guess they are fixing some bugs in SP1 also :) installation of SP1 takes about two hours, long time..

I am running a 2GB Ram computer Dual core but vista is kind of slow when running heavy progs. the bootup is fast, installation is easy and goes like a breeze, internet explorer seems to work way better with vista than with XP although I use Firefox. Firefox is crashing a lot more times in vista than in XP.

What is crazy in Vista is uninstalling softwares, there is always something left.. I installed My broadband modem, and had to reinstall it but vista didn't allow me. lots of bugs in installing softwares.

Software compatibility is another story ! half of my progs. are not compatible with vista.. vista is good looking, king of smooth with all the aero and animations. (that from MAC OS X !) a lot more to say but this is enough for now :)

nice one..but maybe a bit harsh! vista sucks in every other way but seems to be good from the security side. windows XP had more vulnerabilities than vista at about 1 year after release.

The first article is from 2005 and is talking about when Vista was still in Beta. 3 years on, and that particular threat has yet to appear in any form.

As for the 2nd article, are you serious? I mean, did you even read it? It is a spoof article, meant as a joke. If that is the best example you can come up with, I rest my case.

Seriously, the picture of the Vista virus didn't tip you off?

I just bought an Asus notebook running Vista Business. I've had it for a month now and so far I think it's great!!

The only problem is that I can't run IE6 - I need to test websites in it because so many users are still using it.

You could install a couple of virtual PC clients and install XP and Linux on them. Then install all the various flavours of browsers available and test them to your heart's content.

You could also use, http://browsershots.org/ which a few other webmasters make use of.

it is not true. People can afford Vista. But vista has nothing much apart from some great visuals ... the config. vista uses , installing XP there will give much faster run for applications.

Also all app.s donot Fully support Vista yet (hopefully this will be solved soon).

However I am not complaining, vista is better in many parts from XP. But still its visual stuff takes a lot resources ...

I like how vista looks, but hate how it thrashes my disk. Its really slow- on a 2.2Ghz Core2Duo machine with 2GB of ram.

Ah.... get me back to my MacBook Pro!
