Do you use black hat SEO?

Seriously, do you use it? Even trading links with other websites is black hat seo because it is an attempt to manipulate the search engines, its just like selling links. I think most webmasters do. Maybe without even knowing it.
The only way I can see that is completley white hat is to create an amazing website that other websites will want to link to because of the useful content.

Black Hat search engine optimization is customarily defined as techniques that are used to get higher search rankings in an unethical manner. These black hat SEO techniques usually include one or more of the following characteristics:

    - breaks search engine rules and regulations
    - creates a poor user experience directly because of the black hat SEO techniques utilized on the Web site
    - unethically presents content in a different visual or non-visual way to search engine spiders and search engine users.

I just use whatever works best for the goal at hand. Cloaking & gaining hundreds of thousands of links by obviously blackhat methods overnight aren't best for a long term site. Blackhat sites have a nasty habit of getting banned unpredictably.

I will say 1 thing for sure that is there are no "hats" applicable in every situation. The question of ethical vs unethical comes into play only if someone is getting hurt (think xss exploits not some poor sap's lost serp) because of your actions. As long as the actions are victimless, it's survival of the fittest...

PS: Blackhat has misnomer for scamming lately. Reminds me of someone in the B/S/T forum selling a method to scam people on ebay as a "blackhat method". If applied to seo, the blatant scam of ranking a phishing page for some highly searched for keyword can also be termed "blackhat". But this is not (or should not be) the case. Scamming isn't blackhat it's just lame.

    Survival of the fittest. hahaha
Google adsense is banning people left and right who are scraping by just trying to find another source of income.
The only thing wrong with black hat SEO is that it is playing with the search engines algorythm, and they don't like that.
For a long term reputable site I would suggest optimizing the page and creating excellent articles. Attach both a forum and blog to the website and post on them regularly.

Even a white hat site submitting to directories is trying to game the algorithms of SE's by getting backlinks & thereby getting a better serp. Hell even linkbaiting or on page optimization is trying to win the algorithm's favor.

i think even black hat seo technique works now, it will not work in th future (search engine will fine their algorithm always), unless black seoers find another technique again, but it will not work again in future again, then they look for another technique, and so on. Like try to find holly grails. :)

You have to look at it from the search engines perspective.
Googles job is to find the most relevant fresh content and display it in the search queries.

It realy is that simple and will always be.

Ironic then that you should single out how black hat seo plays with the se's algos

Furthermore the whole "quality user experience" gag is bull for the most part. As long as you aren't shoving malware down the visitor's throat you are just trying to make a buck, just like google is...

Not saying I support spam, I don't as a matter of fact but "quality content" sets very high standards.
