v7ndotcom elursrebmem SEO Contest

One puzzling thing to me a month into the contest is that Google's results are still dancing around a bit. My W-P-D page bounces around anywhere between #1 and #7 - while this was expected early on, I'm surprised it hasn't stabilized more now. Any theories on that?

P.S. Here's some datacenter results I'd love to see replicated elsewhere - shows W-P-D in the #1 and #2 spots! ;-)

It looks like Google is hesitating on what he should do with your page right now. Depending on the data centers, I see it 1st, 3rd, 6th or... nowhere to be found (66.102.9.99)
What's going on?

 

That's exactly my point - Google is all over the place - I expected this in the first few days/week, but figured by now things would be more stabilized. And it's not just my page but all of the SERP's, even those from you guys.

The link is wrapped in Javascript (unlike the one to Matt Cutt's Blog) ... so Mike needs to ask Lee to make it a direct one for him! ;-)

Alek makes a good observation, but I think sayles is solid too - just being there might bring some added exposure and/or business.

My comment about the link in Javascript was tongue-n-cheek. The Portals Feedback piece that MikeD is quoted in appears to be behind the wall, so would not be spidered anyway.

sayles is dead-on correct that exposure is good ... heck, if you end up on the front page of the Wall Street Journal print edition, that doesn't infer any direct BL/PR/SEO benefits, but would be quite beneficial if a positive piece.

JimW was quoted extensively in the original WSJ piece - maybe he'd be willing to state publically if this has brought him any business/exposure/etc. to him.

Along those lines, I had one company contact me after v7ndotcom elursrebmem hit the local paper asking for SEO services - I told 'em I was just a hobbiest/enthusiest, so I politically declined ... although since they had already made a $100 donation toward Celiac Research, I tossed 'em a few tidbits.

Alek ... I would be curious aswell ... wonder if MD or JimW got any leads or business out of it. If they play their cards right might be worth more than the prize money for the contest ....and if its good enough they'll get busy with the clients and forget about the contest!

In total from WSJ article and other blogs/forums mentioning the article and or my name:

900 extra uniques, 10 service enquires, 1 sale sealed so far for 2,1K.

+ a lot of name branding.

So yes, already more than the price money.

Crap that was short lived ... 15 mins of fame.. gone from google.ca .. maybe tomorrow I'll want to settle down...

The domain name makes quite a difference and I believe it is still in the fresh boost and perhaps will be sandboxed.
