I'm reading 'PHP and MySQL for Dynamic Web Sites' by Larry Ullman. It's pretty good and maybe what you are looking for.

I started out with the php cookbook nothing better then buying a script though and just working on it. That was the best and easiest way for me to learn. Reading it in a book is 1 thing but actually working on it and seeing it work is so much better.

i learned php from php.net, and I remember that I started with echo. You could also check this http://www.php.net/manual/en/ maybe helps, and it's free.

php.net is a great reference source, but I think it's a really poor place to actually learn php from.

I used a free online book, Practical PHP Programming. A good overview of every major topic as well as some practical applications and script tutorials (hence the name).

I think learning is good if you take someone elses scripts and edit them...and use the manual at php.net.
You might find a script that interests you...then you can try modding it. This is how I am learning PHP.
