Question: When is the best time to sell your customer additional products?

Answer: Immediately after they've just made a purchase.

That's right. The best time to sell your customers additional products is immediately after they've made a purchase. Why? Because they're still in a buying mode. They're still happy and excited about their purchase. More importantly, they still have their credit cards out. What better time to sell them something else?

A lot of marketers send their customers to a "thank you" page immediately after the sale. Let me ask you a question. Why would you invite your customers to leave your website, after they've just made a purchase? See my point? Why not offer them quick and easy add-ons to the original purchase?

For example, perhaps you have some out-dated or less popular items you'd like to get rid of. Why not offer them to your customers at a discount? They'll appreciate the gesture. Don't get me wrong. A nice, courteous thank you page is fine. But a page that offers your customers value at a discount is even better!

So are any of you guys offering your customers additional items immediately after the sale? If not, why not try it? It works!

    Hi Dale,

This is a great suggestion. We don't currently do this but I'll look into adding this feature.

I know it works, because I've seen it at myself so many times! And I promised myself each time that I'm not going to buy those additional things again, but it keeps on happening... Very effective, indeed.

This does work too but how about adding a "would you like to also add this to your cart" page in the middle of processing the original order? Has anyone given that a try?

I think up selling is better during rather than after.

I agree. I think it's easier and a more common practice from the buyers perspective.

Anyone ever ordered something from Amazon.com - they do this stuff the right (non-pushy) way that can actually HELP me.

And I keep buying more from there :D

Amazon does this too - and it's great me thinks.

    I suggest doing both :)

If you structure it like a "prize", for example, "spend at least $25 and you get free shipping" or "buy this and that together, and you get $5 off" then the effectiveness increases further. People love combo deals, and if it only costs them $5 more to get free shipping, they may spend that extra $5 or whatever it is.

I used to give people who shop on my site "points" which they could then redeem for special offer coupons. The coupons ranged from discounts to free stuff. People love stuff like that.

Absolutely, people are crazy for anything free, no matter if it's shipping or just some giveaway worth a few cents. Seeing this phenomenon with Amazon orders pretty often, loads of "on top" orders just to get free shipping.

I think that's the Amazon concept of marketing. I also read it somewhere from Stephen Pierce writing's. Nowdays many sites are using the godaddy.com style, add on the order with discount. But the most active and always used by internet marketers is the One-Time-Offer (OTO).

Anyway the use of Amazon concept is more subtle and friendly. Humans always like recommendations but mostly run away from 'pushed' or 'forced' marketing. But it depends also on your products and your type of business.:)
