Remember long ago when you wanted to find info on something and you come across a geo-cites Fan page or what have you. What happened to those days? For example back a few years ago if you were searching for "dungeons and dragons" one would come across many usefull fan pages related to this. You might find list of items, and info on using the dice and some greate targetted content, maby a midi file or something. Not saying I'm searching for dungeons and dragons. But what if you were Googling up a movie? You might find a well put together entertaining targeted fan page on this movie, NOpe not in anymore! Instead of being entertained by the aspects of the movie, You'll get amazon, imdb and some sites trying to sell you the movie! Say goodbye to the internet you knew before and welcome your door to IGN,gamespot.com,ebay, Wikipedia (Somewhat helpfull),Amazon and about.com, etc So Even those were just geo cities free fan pages. They were Highly targeted and HELPFULL with a touch of personality not to mention. If you feel annoyed by this increasing monopoly on the serps by these giant barf sites. Feel free to vouch your frustration here...
Yeah I do notice that as well. But I guess that what we called a trend eh? Nowadays people are going for wikipedia instead.
eCommerce is being heavily marketed. The Internet has become an information portal as well as a money gateway.. Everything turns evil when money's involved man. I do remember those GeoCities days though.. That was back in what, 2001/2002?
Web 1.0: ~1988 = 'Internet' access costs $22/hour (Compuserve), and $6/hour late at night! 1996-1999 = "Good Old Days (for many of us) of Web 1.0 (nobody called it Web 1.0) and Geocites" 1999-Spring of 2000 = Web 1.0 Mania!!! Mid-Spring 2000 = Tune into cable TV & see Yahoo! up another $25 to $50 today, Yahoo!!! but wait... First, the NASDAQ index peaked at ~5,300 (All time high), Then... . .. ... .... ..... ...... .Thump! Crash!!!!!! Everybody Sell At Once!!!!!!!!!!! Late 2000 into 2001: After a high of ~5,300, the low was ~1,500 points. Many Billions of $$$$$$'s was wiped out very fast. . .. ... .... ..... ...... `````` Web 2.0 BTW. "Those who do not learn from history, tend to repeat it" Learn from history: Get Rich and GET OUT!!! ```````````````
I think Google basically changed that. Their search engine is based mostly on what's popular, and those Geocities pages weren't. Before then, search engines were based mostly on keywords. I don't even know what the heck happened to geogcities and tripod.
I found 1!! http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=final+fantasy+midi&btnG=Google+Search Most of the results are fan pages, no signs of the Amazon trying to sell me FF music.
Man, those are the days. But I still remember the excessive pop-ups that came along with the good old days.
The internet is changing and although those days of the geocities sites were good (but not eye pleasing) things always tend to evolve into a form which may or may not be better. In terms of that i'd say that it's evolving to a worse form because of all the spamming, scamming, viruses and whatnot increasing by the year. As with nico_swd, as long as I can find what I want quickly and easily all is good.
I used the net first time in 1998 in a school Now, I have my access at home Look. If you know what you're looking for, and you know how to access to this content, you can do it. Thank god there are so many naiv and stupid ppl on the Earth. Why is it good for us? We can make some money with them. Yep. Erm, the stupid Google for the movie, and buy it with your aff link. The smart just knows about torrent sites, whatever. (ugh, sorry for my crap english)
While Wiki and the others dominate the serps, they certainly deserve it. 90% of the time, I find what I'm looking for. If you want some more indepth information, then visiting popular blogs in that particular niche won't be a bad idea.
