    Hello Friends,
My opinion is we can get some traffic without backlinks but our site URL is good and high search volume keyword insert in my URL for example cheap flight keyword too much search and our URL is http://www.cheapflight.com. When Search Engine index our website then our website must come on cheap flight keyword. When we search cheap flight keyword then Search Engine must show our website so at last we can say that we can get little traffic without backlinks.

Good luck, you cannot depend on just typing your URL without knowing the keyword of that site to be typed on the search engine...

Backlinks are key to getting traffic from the search engines. Those links to your site from other, non-affilated sites show popularity and endorsement. That's why a backlink from a site with a PR8 is far more valuable than two backlinks from PR1 sites.

I haven't read every single post but I haven't seen anyone
mention PPC. Some people have very successful websites
    from PPC alone

Toolbar PR does not affect rankings on any mainstream search engine. Backlinks are important, but it is completely relative to the competition. If everyone on the first page of organic search for your keyword phrase has very few links, then you only need a few. If your competitors have thousands or millions of backlinks, then you need to compete accordingly. Anchor text is also very important. If you have 1000 backlinks that don't use anchor text, and I have 1 backlink that has correct anchor text, I will out-rank you on Google. (That's if all internal SEO and other factors are equal)

I just ranked my BRAND NEW link directory for "SEO Link Directory" on Goolge. As I type this I am at the top on the first page of Google. Few backlinks were built, but I can't say I've ignored them. The site also only has a Google Toolbar PR of 1, that's just the homepage. Every other page is PR 0. This is because the website is so new, and I used one of my old parked domains that had a PR 1. It was a PR 1 because it only had a couple low PR backlinks. The directory is amtauction dot com. PLEASE DO NOT CLICK ON THE SEARCH RESULT FROM GOOGLE UNLESS YOU ARE GOING TO VISIT A FEW PAGES AS THIS MAY NEGATIVELY AFFECT MY RANKINGS. Thanks!

I agree. I do it now with a couple of my sites. I do have "some" backlinks from articles I submitted awhile back(not many), but, I have one site that is a PR 2 that is on page 1 or 2 (varies) of Google, MSN and Yahoo. It has beat out many sites with more links and higher PR....

    "Knock on wood"....

    Always has me sweating bullets!

Back links and traffic has no relations between each other.
If you are ranked with the top most searching keyword than you would surely get traffic.
Back links are just for G PR. But now a days i don't think so, one of my friend site having five back links though website is having PR 0 ,
and one of my community website is not having any Back link though its PR 1,
if you are not believing just click here and check out this website.
    Thanks and Regards,

    Bingo

Ive had well SEOd sites rank high for quite popular terms with little to no link building at all!!
If you use SEF URLS, quality unique meta descriptions, and have some decent on page optimisation and content...you can still rank well

Thanks for the reinforcement seo daddy! Some + rep for speaking the truth. Too many people try to regurgitate what they read somewhere else or make claims based on very, very little true experience.

Backlinks do two main things.... help with the page rank of the pages within your site, and they can help a new site get indexed (found) faster. Backlinks do not have a direct impact on your rankings in the organic SERPs.

Your ranking in the SERPs (search engine result pages) are based on about 200 factors -with ONE of those factors being the Page Rank (PR) of your site.

As I believe it was SlingShot said, how MANY backlinks you need to rank higher on the search engine result pages depends on the competition for that particular keyword. How many other competing sites are optimizing for this keyword... allinanchor? allintitle? You need to evaluate the competition as there is not set answer to how many backlinks are needed to rise in the SERPs for your niche/keyword.

Yes, backlinks are important, but they are not ALL important. Not all back links pass value to your site. One way links appear to be more 'valuable' to a site than reciprocal links.... and one way links that occur naturally, as a matter of recommendation tend to be even better.

Make a site that people WANT to link to. If your niche is not overly-competitive, be selective with your link building efforts. Don't rush off to buy 1,000 links for $10 or whatever the going rate is now. I have seen many clients get burned by this. They pay good money for backlinks to their site/web pages, and they end up on 'bad neighborhood sites' or on sites that use the 'no follow' attribute.

Always know and analyze your competition.

Sorry for the long post. I don't post often, but this is one of my favorite topics.

Best of luck to you =)

Traffic adds the weight to your site. Google has no Idea that your site has good relevance for the keywords search without getting weight for your site. So Absolutely not. I don't think you can be even indexed without traffic.

so you have got loads of advice here... and m sure some of them are really good and true in a sense... but as far as my experience says... linking to good PR sites with some good alexa and page rank will definitely help you to boost up your search engine traffic... google/organic if your site is real good and real content good will send you little traffic... but you really need to take some steps yourself for your lovable site to get some targeted traffic.......
