One feminist theory about more and more revealing clothing goes like this: Women were "liberated" in the 1970s and rebelled against their previous roles and thus became a more powerful influence in society. The backlash against this "liberation" took the part of upping the ante on beauty and drowning women's consciousness in looks rather than in intellectual development. So the skimpier the clothing that the fashion industry puts out (dominated by men, the argument goes) the more women have to spend their time and energy on having the "right bodies" to fit into those clothes. And since very few women naturally have supermodel or "ideal" figures (without surgery) they ride a never-ending wheel of trying to meet society's expectations. This, the theory concludes, "keeps them subservient in a new way." I don't know enough to agree or disagree with this theory. But it's one I've heard put forward for more and more nudity in fashion. Personally, I think it relates to the irresistable urge that each generation has to shock the pants off of the previous generation. It strongly distinguishes kids from adults, in other words. Those fashions that get the biggest response from the 'rents or the "old folks" tend to catch on more. So it's rare these days to see a women under 25 not showing off a good portion of her pelvic region while going about mundane tasks such as shopping. Ten years ago that would have blown most people away. And it blows away some older people these days.
Has there really been a trend towards being skinny? Sure, but take a good look around and I'll bet you would find not a lot has changed, it's just hidden. The people you see in popular places are likely people comfortable with their weight. What defines that comfort level? TV, Ads, Movies, etc. The people who are not comfortable with the extra weight they carry around frequent less popular places; Visit Wal-mart or Publix and you'll get the picture. There are a lot of obese people in the world just like that poor sole above. Are you obese? Did you know that the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute defines overweight as having a body mass index of 30 or greater?
