NOTE: Title bar typo, its illegit not illegal

Every day I see high ranking websites spamming their way to the top.

Just search for web design india or outsource to india or anything web development india, you'll know what I mean.

Being a legit 100% white hat myself, I would of never done this type of stuff, but I am having strong urges to.

    Discuss.

    blackhat was never "illegal"......"unethical".....maybe.

if it is your website, you can do anything to it....

"white hat" simply means followings rules made by search engines..

if you don't want to follow their rules, it is entirely upto you...

no one will take you to court for it...;).

I think black hat means different things to webmasters as it does to the search engines.

My line for black hat is essentially sites that steal content and the like. I hate these webmasters and would not encourage anyone to go down this route.

If your just talking about a few link building techniques that Google may not like the sound of, well I would call that grey.

Yeah but the world used to say that being white hat was the way to go and Black hat will get you banned from the Search Engines, guess what, apparently it was all bs.

What I mean by Black Hat here btw is Title spamming, keyword spamming, meta tags spamming, link spamming, spamming in general, cloaking, spamming for links etc.

why not purple? lol- there's so many "hats" these days it's getting stupid. I've even heard people coming out with blue and even pink hat. lol - it's ridiculous. It won't be long before we run out of "hats" and move onto "beige socks SEO".

There is no such a thing as white hat seo.... Search engines does NOT want you to influence their rankings, they do NOT want you to optimize your site, cause this means that you have an unfair advantage over a website that was not optimized. You basically cheat their algorithm, with your optimization.

There is only blackhat seo, no matter what you say.

Interesting. But wouldn't you agree some techniques seem more ethical than others? When I think of black hat seo, I think of *unethical* techniques. Which of course is relative... hence this discussion.

I am not agree with you. Actually "Black hat" is used for " Something hidden ". It doesn't mean "Other way ". And here black hat techniques means " A technique that generate the fast result but out of order.

Sorry to ruin your party but you're wrong.

White Hat SEO means, making your website better than your competitors, giving more to the visitors and following all the rules.

Black Hat SEO however is just getting on top without giving a damn about the rules.

What rules? Are there any regulations for SEO that I haven't heard of?

And white hat SEO doesn't mean making a better website than your competitors, or giving "more to the visitors". Giving more to the visitors has nothing to do with SEO, unless those visitors are spiders. SEO = Search Engine Optimization, not user optimization. Adding "quality content" to your website in the form of a beautifully crafted article or a splog is still manipulating your site to do better in the SEs, and thus it's against "the rules". Either way there's still going to be a little guy being trodden on. At least blackhats are honest about it.

Dude, you've got links in your signiture. Thats not simply making your site better for visitors, it is an attempt to directly increase your SERPS. This gives you an advantage over a webmaster who is not doing forum posting. No webmaster has "cast thier vote" for you to get these links. Sure, its not a black hat link building technique, but it sort of fits with nickflames comment.

Well...obviously some black hat techniques are illegal such as defacing or hacking sites to get links from these pages. It all depends on your definition of and what you include in black hat SEO.

Few 'blackhat' techniques are illegal - though there are some hacking and spamming habits that could land you in court.
The major search engines have their terms of service, and if you transgress those, expect them to penalise you. If you do it knowingly, for short-term gain, don't whine when they catch up with you.
