Rackforce is great, with a fanatical support service as they promote.

all depends on what you are looking for like storage, bandwidth and if your site is a resource hot or not, there is so much stuff out there , that in most cases you will not even need to go to dedicated, since those can be a hassle especially if you do not know what you are doing. There are plenty of shared hosting companies out there that will offer great features.

    Regards

I'm using TMS (TailorMadeServers) and I'm happy with them, prices are avarage. Support is good. There is also LT (LayeredTech) but it is 100% self-managed, so you need some unix/linux administration/management knowledge.

DedicatedNow is in the same datacenter as LT and they both have very good reputation. I have just got a server with Dedicatednow a week ago and could not be happier, I did not purhase any management plans, but their support is so good they usually answer my emails withint 15 minutes, and they have 24/7 tech support which seems to know what they are doing so far.

Also, for more advanced management they have various monitoring/management plans you might want to get to get you started.

and no I am not affiliated with them, I am just a happy customer, 7 days into it.

There is a great resource webhostingtalk.com, you can find more info out there than you can handle, your posts will be replied within minutes.

    Best of luck

If you're looking for an unmanaged dedicated server, I highly recommend LayeredTech.com, they have quite good prices and awesome services.

also if you are on a budget, you can go with hivelocity, they have the best pure value in hardware and bandwidth, but service , uptime and support are terrible

I'm a fan of http://www.liquidweb.com/ and use them for some of our sites including Site Sift. I liked the fact that they offer managed dedicated hosting and there service is good.

I just dumped PowWeb for exactly the same reason. I'm flying high now on a dedicated machine at Rackspace. Their techs are amazing - call them up (guaranteed 5-second phone answer time, 24 hours) - and they will do anything you need, explain it to you, stay with you as long as you need it - and it's all included in your monthly payment. They're not cheap but if you're a professional it's way worth it. I can finally sleep at night...

I agree RackSpace is the best, just a little pricy for my needs. I'm looking at a company called NetNation.

you must be flying extra high, since I transfered my 8 powweb accounts onto dedi as well, but still rackspace prices are too steep.

    Good job and good luck

For many of us, our web sites could be considered our most valuable employee. Yet most of us are still happy to pay 20x as much each month for our cell phone than for our web hosting. I'm just saying put it in perspective: if all your income depends on your web site, isn't your web site worth $400 a month (1/10 what a low-level employee would cost)? Is it really worth only $7/month?

I'm not trying to sound condescending. I've found that it's not worthwhile to lose $20K in sales because I'm only willing to spend $7/mo on web hosting -- and that's exactly what happened to me in January, due to account suspensions at PowWeb. Now that I'm spending $400/mo it won't happen again.

    :)

In your case it is very much true, over the year the constant powweb mysql and server downtime cost me approx a $1,000. But my theory is that your hosting can not cost you more than profit of three days :)

Piece of mind is definitely priceless. And if you have a money making business you can not afford not even 1 hr of downtime.

Very true indeed. I was just a little surprised in going from the best value (not necesserily quality) shared host, to absolutely top notch dedicated server.

Unfortunately for me I was unable to make that particular change since my sites require about 3TB of bandwidth monthly and with rackspace that would cost well into four figures. For a lower bandwidth site, I would make the same move.

Yeah, if you have a need for bandwidth of that calibre, you should be looking elsewhere. I had considered RackSpace, but they were too pricy and only offering 150gb of bandwidth when I could get 500gb or 1000gb for cheaper.

It also does come down to if you can afford even an hour of downtime. My sites are purely content based and serve ads which produce the revenue, so having an hour of downtime is affordable, but not preferred ever. Other sites selling products can't afford that one hour of downtime -- plus it makes them look unreliable. If you have the need, you should definitely invest into a ROCK SOLID host for your sites, no matter the cost.
