I just did a speed test, and my internet is running at 5Mb instead of the usual 3Mb, so I went to my ISP's site had a chat and found out that they terminated their 3Mb connection. Why did this make me happy? I had the 3Mb service They upgraded me to a 5 Mb connection And it didn't cost a thing! lol. Also, would you recommend me running a website with that internet connection and these computer stats: (just a personal one with a forum and other stuff) (or what about renting it out for a dedicated host?) HP Pavillion 2.8 Ghz Celeron 1.25 GB RAM 160 GB + 33 GB HD
This configuration is OK for your needs. But the thing which matters in hosting is uptime. How much time you will keep your system running in the worst conditions like power failure or a heavy load on system? If you have power backup and the best available cooling system you can run a linux server over this. Thanks
i just have 3 stock fans (1 for power supply, 1 for case, and 1 for processor) would that be fine? The computers is a few years old (maybe 3).
Even I wish my ISP cancel my 2mbps connection and instead replace it with 5 mbps one; I am ready to run the speed test. Any one is listening ?
The most important factor here would be your upload speed. Your computer specs are not nearly as important as your upload speed. If you start getting heavy traffic on your site, its going to kill your downloading speed, and will slow down your pc somewhat. My desktop is 4x what yours is and I would never consider running a website off my pc as a server. We bought a new server for our company at work, it cost $5000 to build, just to give you some idea of what were talking about with a dedicated server.
Eh, I would never run a website from my own computer considering how cheap hosting plans are now. I started my first blog a couple days ago and to my surprise I've been averaging 500 uniques a day, if I had been hosting this on my own computer it would either die or cease to be of use to me for expanding my website
