I used 760px wide if designing for 800x600 or 980px wide for 1024x768.

Most of the time it's better to design a site that can resize with the browser though, otherwise on the new 16:10 screens you end up with your site looking like a postage stamp in the middle of the screen. :)

Fluid designs are my favorite, though if I'm going for fixed width I'll set it at 1000px.

Well, something like 80% of our visitors have at least 1024x768, so 1000px is pretty safe.

My sites are 1003px in width to make it 1024x768 friendly. You should consider using fluid designs if possible as proposed by 'Nick' since people nowadays use wide screen monitors as well.

A fluid designed webpage is one that shrinks or expands to the browser window size. Using width: 100% in your style definitions for your main container and/or your header container will do this. You might want to go width:90% as I do in most of my sites like this.

A fluid design is a bit more complex then a rigid (set width) design.

    Hope this helps

size of banner or poster is depend on content and theam of site.so first of all deside for which site you wana to make banner, then build a banner such that it is eye catching and not too bulky.
most of monitors have screen resolution of 1024x768. so width of banner should be arround 900 to 1000px.

I still design mostly for 800x600, but the size you design for depends on your target market to an extent, just remember that there are still quite a few people out there using 800x600.

you use 780 width (which is min support by most screen nowaday) or simply using "fluid" width by using width=100%
