Hello everyone, I am a bit confused about submitting your site/blog to directories. Some people have told me that there are only about 100 or so worth submitting to. However I have also heard that if you submit to 3-4 thousand, such as the ones on this list: echoarcade.com/directory.php ...that you would be pretty well off in the rankings for your keywords. Anyone care to clarify? Thanks in advance! EDIT: To clarify, I do not mind doing the work at all, I'm just having trouble finding which work to do!
There are directories that are far superior to most (ie. DMOZ), but in my opinion I don't think it can hurt to submit to as many as you can.
i think submissions are a waist of time google does not care how many directories your in they like to see links but not crappy ones
Submit to as many free directories as you can. At worst, the link won't be valued by Google. At best, your rankings in the search engines will rise. Look at the list in my sig. I submit sites to that same list and can easily take a new site and get pr 3-4 out of it (depends on niche). Submit articles, bookmarks, etc. so that your link building efforts are not concentrated in just one area. Happy Link Building!
There is really no point of submitting into 3-4 k directories..Find 100-200 quality directories and submit in them.
I primarily use directory submissions as a way to get backlinks that are recognized by the SE's which can help with PageRank and also to get indexed. I've received a PageRank of 3 on most of my sites simply by using directory submissions but the PR has taken a hit and dropped to PR2 now.
Best bet is to spend your time submitting to quality directories. Getting good backlinks on 100-200 strong directories would be CONSIDERABLY more valuable than many low grade ones.
Work on getting links from other sites also. Directories do not hurt and can help but links from sites that are similar topic help more.
Checkout the backlinks of directory.Check listed sites and see if the quality of listed site (If directory list crappy sites then stay away from directory). Also check cache dates and make sure that the category in which are you submitted is cached.Pagerank is also a +.Also check listed sites backlinks using link: site.com command and if the directory shows up then it means directory link will help and then submit in directory .
Not really true! Google recommends submitting websites to quality directories. It is stated in their webmaster guidelines page as well. Google do care about backlinks and directory backlinks can play a major role in the whole process.
A number of factors really but I think common sense prevails in most circumstances. If a directory has a fair few entries, a decent pagerank, some kind of Alexa rank and just 'looks' professional then it's probably worth submitting to. However if it looks cheap, tacky, no PR, no alexa, barely any entries, probably low quality and not worth bothering with.
This topic has been debated many times and you have two basic opinions. Some say yes submit to as many as you can and others say submit to only those which are quality websites. Quality websites usually means those which have a page rank between 5-10. And the page your link is being submitted to is the one that really counts as opposed to the main page. I personally think submit to as many as you can including quality ones and others. What do you have to lose? Time? True but at least you won't regret it if you later find out for sure that it is good to submit to many directories. But start of with the quality ones. Then work your way down. That way if you get bored and decide to quit at least you will have submitted your website to the quality directories. Oh and remember both article directories and directories, not just one. Hope that helps.
if they are quality directories then it a different story this guy is talking about a couple of 1000 directories not quality directories one
I got impression that (other than dmoz.org and such) Search Engines treat directories sites as link farms and neglect them, I submitted some of my sites in many directories and those listings are no where to be seen in search results. It may be best to exchange links with a similar web-site on its links page, SEs value that.
There is no real indication that any of the SE's truly value any directory over any other... other then maybe Yahoo giving props to the Yahoo Directory. Google does clone the ODP, but then, they had the update on it on a two year cycle (Other then the last month or three, its last update was 2005!). Finding a link to the directory through the google main pages can be a chore in most places, and rarely if ever will you see either the Google clone, or DMOZ in the top SERPs. The DMOZ homepage does list several Search Engines as using their data, but if you look deeper into it, that is just not the case anymore. The ODP is owned by NetScape, but if you look, they don't mention it anywhere on their site, or search engine. In fact, their search is now powered by Google. AOL owns Netscape, and they don't mention a directory either, and again, are powered by Google. The only SE that truly gives the ODP any real worth is Alexa, but the only people that really use Alexa are webmasters, and diehard Amazon shoppers.
