Register a domain name through a hosting service is not a good practice. Though they commonly say your are able to transfer your retain ownership and you would be able tro transfer your domain elsewhere, there is a large number of services failing in this matter when you want to drop the hosting.

With the exception of Yahoo and Netfirms, I would not registrar a domain through a hosting service, better try a reputed registrar and the point your nameserver to your new webspace.

I use to get my domain with separate providders in order to avoid any issue that might arise when I decide to point it elsewhere

usually I buy names at namecheap, 1and1 or godaddy

This is true. It just takes a little longer to transfer.

Sure it is. It really doesn't matter where you register your domain. Once you find your host just point the nameservers to your domain in name.com and you'll be all set.
