Joomla 1.5 almost here...

... it's going to be released any day now...

... the development svn trunk is now frozen...

Has anybody given the RC's a run yet?

What do you think to 1.5?

 

Interesting as im suddenly becoming interested in using Joomla for the first time, im amazed at the amount of modules available for it, its overwhelming.

I read some people saying theres a learning curve, others say its super easy.

Do they mean a learning curve for someone who has never used a script before ( i have installed and used scripts ) or do they mean the sheer amount of stuff available ads to the learning curve?

 

RC4 is stable so theres no reason not to install it and take a look at it for yourself. It really is incredible what you can do with Joomla - in most cases with only a few clicks. Directories social networking, ecommerce. They've really worked on the security in 1.5 (but with anything so popular you will continue to see exploits if you don't take precautions).

Learning curve?

The backend takes a little getting use to. Not as intuitive as say wordpress but then theres the power. Installation is a breeze if you have installed scripts before. All in all I wouldn't call it super easy but I don't think the learning curve is that much. Like most powerful CMS applications you just have to get used to how things are done and unlike say Drupal ALOT can be done right from within the admin panel which is a lot easier.

Many of the most popular extensions are uploaded and installed from within the admin panel without even needing to be unzipped first. I see Joomla with the first significant update form the Mambo base as having quite a future.

 

I had used one RC build some time back. Didn't use it alot though, due to some compatability issues with some templates and extensions.

The admin template looks better.

 

Just try 1.5 on local installation only, but never use 1.5 online because most of the extensions I use not available in 1.5

True enough but most extension developers are putting a high priority on making sure things work with 1.5. Work on that has already begun in advance of official release. Its very important to the community.

Does anyone have a clue what the major noticeable differences are from 1.x to 1.5? I want to implement Joomla on a site. While I like to have the latest stable release(s), I don't want to have to go with 1.5 if 1.x is sufficient and will continue to be supported by the community. What is there about 1.5 that I will miss out on?

 

1.5 has major improvements to SEO and the admin panel should be easier to use

 

I noticed you can run 1.5 in "legacy" mode. I would imagine that nullifies the SEO benefits, correct?

 

I dont think that legacy causes any problems to seo, in my opinion for those trying to decide to start a joomla site or not, maybe one option is to start one test site just for learn, for starting understand how it works. I felt some dificulties, ok the true is that I thought i would never make it. But as time was passing I kept developing some sites and returning to that joomla test site. After some time, all the process became natural and easy to understand. Joomla or other CMS it´s good to be prepared to start other projects using all CMS features.

 

I tried the 1.5 Beta and it looks perfect. I will surely upgrade from 1.13 Version.

 

joomla is good....If you practise it everyday i think u cn learn it...

I wait for this release for a long time. Hope it is released asap.

 

I see in 1.5 major improvements.

 

From what I have seen, I would be shocked, SHOCKED, if Joomla 1.5 is released and is not loaded with bugs. Bugs that professionals my be able to deal with - but maybe not. Time will tell. But my guess it will be months or years to stabilize - if indeed it can ever be stabilized. The whole development process seems so chaotic.

Can you be a little more clearer on what you mean by 'chaotic', exactly?

 

It just seems to have taken sooooo long.

I see now there is going to be a 1.0.14 release because of a number of security issues in the current build...
