Of course someone will be awake, i was just saying in general. The update will happen, people will stop guessing and all they are going to do is wait for the next update to be completely wrong AGAIN....

    Patience -

For a second this new password protected page I had showed a PR5 and I was like freaking out... refreshed it, it was the same. Restarted the browser and it was PR0 once again. Scared the **** out of me.

Sometimes browsers keep the PR from the previous page.

Why is it "the sky is falling"? If you aren't spamming - if you have legitimate content and aren't trying to "game" Google - then an update simply means that your site is being honestly reassessed for value.

Sure, things out of your control can affect your ranking: sites that linked to you go out of business or clean up old links, etc. Or maybe the world has just lost interest in the vast world of stale bread recipes that you have devoted your life and website to promoting. For those people, sure, the sky probably moved downward.

But for many, their star is ascendant. Many thousands of sites have noticed their enthralling posts and have linked and cited them so much that Google's hard drives actually have a measurable percentage of space devoted to just that. For those people, the sky will be moving upward and there will be rejoicing.

And for many of us, who aren't spammers, who also aren't flavors of the day, but have maintained a steady popularity through the years, well, the updates are sometimes interesting but never really anything we lose sleep over (either from excitement or despair). I move from 6 to 5 and back to 6 and then back to 5.. so what? I'm more interested in my Analytics reports than this, and most interested in the income reports - that's what counts, after all.

If traffic and income are slipping, well, I need to take action if I can - to stem the tide, and return to positive growth. But if a PR update moves me down because Google changed their algorithms but my traffic hasn't changed, and my link popularity is static or growing, then what am I supposed to do? Nothing, because there is nothing to be done and no reason to do anything anyway.

I don't see anything wrong with people gossiping about updates, real or imagined. I think some folks here are far too jaded and grumpy :)

We all get way to worked up over updates...

...if you do a decent job with your site and keep it moving forward, google will eventually notice and give some respect to it.
