That's true. But Dio was relating buying a car to buying a website. And when buying something that you can't get your hands on first and "take for a drive" you have to take other things into account. DP rep is just one of many things.

Of course, the DP sales forum is a good place because if there is something amiss about an website for sale then people usually jump all over the thread and point just about everything wrong about it out.

Also, a genuine seller would also be willing to engage in a decent dialogue (on forum, PM or offline) about the sale.

So there's a lot of gut instinct involved.

Newbies usualy get reds more often.
When i was new here I got three reds (and I mean big reds) for my post over dmoz and I was red for three horrible minutes ;). but then came a wacko, a doc and a dmoz guy to rescue me.
my advice- stay here, stay cool, keep posting(I mean quality posting), and you'll be green very soon.

I respect what Dio was saying I was just trying to add the fact that reputation in a forums type context is not always based on someone's integrity, but based more on rules of that said forum. So I don't see where reputation in a forum context would ever be a deciding factor in any decision that should be included in buying or purchasing anything even web related stuff. I was using the car example to only say that being self informed is more important than any opinion that others may have, which I think is a good thing!

The reality is a good car salesman would have a very good rep. I know some extremely succesful high-end car salesman and they would have no problem getting a lot of green rep. That is why they make a significant amount of money.

Your run-of-the-mill carsalesman will be all over the map really. They might skew a bit below average overall, but not by much.

That being said, I am not sure rep is a real good indicator of what you should or should not buy from people. Rep rarely has anything to do with sales on DP.

I dont really care if they are honest, or have a good site. Red rep usually means they are annoying as 5hit and have been so to many users.

There are to many opportunities available on the net to even worry about buying from members with red reps.

Rep would be more of an indicator whether you would want to hang out with that person or not.

For me it would depend on the value and my own experience with the person. I just bought a domain and some content off GADOOD, who we all know, has 2 reds. But that's mainly for his choice of language so I had confidence it wouldn't reflect his complete self. He responded promptly etc. so I went ahead and was not disappointed.

    So.. It depends IMO.

Yuo can always cover your ass with a well written contract and some investigation.

Good to see Shawn has added the Feedback feature - it should help a lot, you'll at least be able to see if a reddy is a goody or a baddie when it comes to sales :)

Good point. Really, much more important than any rep system is past clients. If you want to buy something from someone here, pay no attention to little red (or green) blobs. Ask around. Ask if anyone has done business with the person before. That's the best business rep system around. Referrals.
