How much do backlinks effect SERP?

Just wondering the effect of backlinks on SERP. For example, for a moderately competitive keyword phrase, what would a single PR 5, PR6 or PR 7 non related link do to SERP position. How about related single links with PR? All comments appreciated!

P.S.- What is a typical timeframe for these SERP effects to happen?

 

i think backling and related conent is only way to get high serps

 

It takes max 1 month for the SERPs to stabilize. I usually notice changes within a week.

For moderate competition or above keywords backlinks are VERY important.

backlink with anchor text is the root of SERP!

 

Can someone explain why there are sites with good content but few if any backlinks to speak of who actually enjoy a pretty good SERP for a wide range of searched keywords/phrases?

I'd also like to know how some sites have high PR's with few backlinks and no age.
