Marketing a vacation/travel site

    Hi, for those who already know a little about me, I am no inexperienced in marketing strategies and the like. Anyway I have never promoted a vacation site before and I got some ideas on how to get the FIRST traffic (that is the traffic that is not generated through search engines). Nevertheless I don't know what the "most" effective one would be for such a vacation site (about european vacation).

    Please contribute your experience with related sites, I'd greatly appreciate it.

    Here are possible ways I have already thought of:
    - travel forums
    - slowly exchanging links with travel sites (but is this really helpful for this and not only for seo?
    - ...?

    niches include european ski vacation, but even then I wouldn't know where to promote or find valuable link partners, that is partners that are not for seo purposes only but provide me with traffic!
