I saw that earlier. Yahoo's shareholders have to be gritting their teeth. Knowing you can't win and admitting you can't are two totally different things. That yahoo just threw up its arms and gives up is kinda frightening. I think this really means: Its too hard to improve our search, and its easier to raise the minimum overture bids, that that is our primary focus at the moment
thats crazy. specially since google search results are not exactly on point at the moment. matter of fact theres an argument to be made that yahoo and perhaps even msn has better search at the moment. they should be pushing full steam ahead right now fighting google. i think the main thing keeping google #1 is habit. people are so used to searching on google they just do it without second thought. sort of like"kleenex" or however its spelled. "kleenex" is the general term for a tissue even though kleenex is actually a company. its like google has become the new kleenex.
Well I think they get traffic in plenty of other areas that google doesn't - and of course it can still be monitized in other ways. Personally I prefer to use Yahoo for my mainstream news, I like yahoo mail and I previously used myyahoo quite a bit too before I discovered something else. I still use google for all my searchs.
Just sound to me as if yahoo are kicking google in the teeth by saying without the best search algorithm google would be pretty much nothing
For what my 2 cents is worth, it is not that Yahoo, Google or MSN are any better really than the other. IMHO it is the fact as stated that Google is a known brand for search. Until Yahoo or MSN has the money to throw at branding their names big time, none of the will catch Google. Once we see and I suspect it will be MSN shell out big bucks for branding, then and only then will Google start to lose market share. Looking at it from a consumers point of view, Google has a unique name and when I think Google I think search, nothing more. When I persoanlly think of MSN, I think Microsoft, which I dont relate to search engine, at least not yet. When I think of Yahoo, I also think search, but Yahoo has not spent enough on branding and public exposure IMO.
You are so on point! I 'm trying to kick my Google habit! Yahoo and MSN have much more relevant search results and they appear to index important news items faster.
Google is a search engine company. Search is only a part of business for Yahoo and MSN. search traffic counts about 5% of Internet traffic. I didn't see anything wrong with that statement. Just different focus and business strategy.
That's a good question... even if that's what they think internally, certainly not something you should say.
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/256748_yahoo24.html Here is the direct link to the article btw. I'm not sure why they would say this, but maybe they wanted shareholders to back off and stop having any expectations in that area.
i'm with you even if it is a logical position to take ... why say it though i think a better long term goal is to have ypn be a better product / service and have bigger distribution for webmasters and advertisers ... though i have my doubts about that as well
I don't believe that, it is propaganda.... Yahoo is talking trash, they are going after the search market big time
3 martini lunch - "Whoth on the phone? An interview, you thay? Puth them through, I'm sotally tober" Seriously - What they're saying is very realistic. Yahoo seems to be focusing on content, and attracting users to their tools, articles, news, video, mail, etc. They're doing a good job at it. I visit Yahoo probably 4x as much as I do Google. However, I almost never click on Yahoo ads. I find myself clicking on Google's adwords somewhat frequently, and have purchased a few products via adwords recently. Considering the fact that Yahoo is pretty far behind in search tech, it's probably not a bad tactic (but still not a good thing to say in an interview).
Google made a great deal when they purchased 5% of AOL, Time Warner is the worlds largest owner of content PERIOD, they are the worlds largest media company! They had to do it, not only to keep the search business, but they would have lost more than the Billion they invested in market capitalization quickly if Microsoft or Yahoo would have got the deal done. So it cost Google nothing because they would have lost more if they would have let the deal go to Microsoft because investors would have sold Google off and the company would have lost great value should that have happened. I think one of the reasons Yahoo is saying things like this is because of the Google/AOL relationship, who knows Google may own all of AOL soon I still say Yahoo is up to something and they and Microsoft may merge one day in the future, so I would take it all with a grain of salt.
Maybe to get Google to let down their guard while they (Yahoo) secretly work on increasing their share.
The game is not over by a long shot, mergers can happen quickly and consolidation in an industry with so many players going after the same market always happens Maybe Yahoo buys ASK or Bill Gates buys Yahoo, we just don't know what is going to happen, but don't count out Amazon or eBay either, they may come up with something to compete in the search business too. Both companies are into local search and that is a giant market.
Well this is just for fun but the VP for ebay just purchased a 20 million dollar home in my neighborhood in Vegas, so maybe he is using a lot of the stock he has now on this home cause he knows there is a sale about to happen with ebay. Wouldnt it be interesting to see Microsoft buy Yahoo, Ebay and Amazon. Wouldnt this make things a little more interesting. No I didnt get the sell on that home, it would have been nice though..
