I'm sorry they do [that is, they say they do, and there is reason to believe] but the reality is, they do not do it well !

Run the Kws through for semantics manually and you will see a difference on each one

I agree that the user doesn't care. However, It seems that Search Engines DO care. I personally consider 'H' tags in order of priority when coding a page (h1 being the toppermost). For aesthestic design purposes I use CSS to specify exactly how the 'H' tags are seen by the user.

    This is a bizarre debate.

Nokia999, trust me, H1, H2, H3, and <title> tags matter to G & Y. They are also the basics of good of page design http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG10-HTML-TECHS/ .

Analyze your space. If the top 10 pages don't use Header tags then do some backlink analysis and determine how they are achieving their rankings. If they don't have a lot of backlinks - then do what they are doing.

Foxy and Nohabor may be successful swimming against the current but I certainly wouldn't advise it.

I'm with classifieds on this one. Repeated testing from my own sites has shown H tags make a huge difference in results.

Ideally an H1 tag should be the first tag after the <body>

Font tags waste a lot of space also.

For SEO you want to make use of H1 tags, using CSS you can set the font size.

Do you know, someone actually gave me a negative rep on this thread for saying it as it is!

They weren't man enough to sign it other than to say "no offence" !

So to emphasise the point that I was making whoever it was....dig this.

    1. I bought a new site on the 22nd Jan - yes.... two days ago
    2. I put up the shell with as much relevant info that I could so that I could "get it going"
    3. I did not use H1s anywhere, neither did I use any "style" commands but I did use css font size control to limit the size to 10px
    4. I placed it on this forum on the 21st to get it "seeded"
    5. That is the only link in [other than whois]
    6. Today it is 26 on Google for a KW
    7. It is 19 for allinanchor for the same KW
    8. It is 3 for allinurl for the same KW
    9. It is 14 for allintitle for another KW

So you ... whoever you are, can keep your head in the sand, if that is what you want, but, a word of advice... we all come here to express views and give assistance and to find out more .. some a good and some are not but you do not need to be offensive with comments like

I too do think they matter. and besides if they dont effect you negatively what's the big deal? even if it's at least a small gain just use it..use it right tho..

you use h tags for headings and font tags for descriptions following those h tags..

This discussion become pointless post by post. Some guys try to prove the importance of font size basing on the SERP's and forget about a hundreds other factors or something like "I don't use Hn but I'm on top"... We're glad but where is the point, it would be nice if You post that keyword(-s), URL... And like I said before, crawlers can not interpret a size of font, it's just impossible in technical view...

    Hi Basoone,

    Simple tips from my sensei

    Where to put keywords:
    1. In the <title> tag.
    2. In the <a>nchor text of incoming links.
    3. In <h>eadlines, <b>old/<strong>, or <i>talics/<em>phasis tags.
    4. In the <body> text - the closer to the physical start of the HTML file the better.
    5. In an <img> tag's ALT attribute (as appropriate and not repeated too often).
    6. In the page's filename.
    7. In the subdirectory name.
    8. In the <meta> keywords and description tags (no help for Google, some value in Yahoo!).

    seo tips---
    # keywords in Url (domain name)
    # keywords in Title
    # keywords in Heading
    # keywords in body text-especially near the beginning
    # keyword proximity
