Its not waste of time but make sure you don't drop your links in a linkfarm. Go with an established and well promoted directory.
like mixke said, be careful with backlinks, where and how you place them.. or you might end up de-indexed by google
Directories can also be a source of traffic and can help you increase SERP rank from the backlinks you accumulate from them
in my exprience its just for backlink purposes only but didn't have that much quality traffic result.

its a good idea. It takes time to do which is what puts alot of people off it. But in the end directories are mainly for backlinks.
Can someone post a good list or resource for good link directories?? I know theres tonnes of them out there, so that might be difficult, so maybe just some "guidelines" as to what is a good directory and what isnt... i'm new to SEO, currently building my first site in attempt to get it high in the serp (all my previous sites were just for fun (designin...)) If you can do something more profitable than the price it is to pay someone else to do the submitting then it is not worth it to do submitions .....but they should still be done.
